One of the problems with the game of golf is that if you want really good quality equipment you have to spend big money. Some of the big name brands such as Titleist, Callaway and Nike charge very high prices for clubs, balls and other equipment. The fact is there golfing products are the best and will improve your game, however, if like me you can't afford to spend thousands of pounds on a game you only get to play once a month or so there has to be an alternative. For me that alternative is Golden bear.

Golden Bear are a company owned by Jack Nicholson, who is one of the most well known professional golfers of all time. Nicholson has a few different brands of clubs but Golden Bear are the ones I use. They are aimed at beginners who are just making the step up. The clubs are a reasonable price and of a reasonable quality. They are designed to be forgiving and yet still play well in all conditions.

I actually managed to get a set of these Golden Bear clubs at an auction. The Widetrack set are a decent set of clubs that will suit most beginner to intermediate golfers. I have been using these clubs for quite a few years now and have always been quite happy with them. The fact is I do have a few other clubs in my bag but the vast majority are Golden Bear.

The irons in this set all have a good size of head. That means that you have more surface area to hit the ball with which makes it that little bit easier. When it comes to controlling the ball and adding spin these are not the best, if you are looking for pin point accuracy there are better clubs. But if you just want to get your ball down the fairway and onto the green then these are fine.

The woods and driver are not the strong part of this set. I must admit I bought a separate driver and use a separate 3 wood. The Golden Bear woods are not really bad clubs, they just lack any serious distance and that is something I am always in need of when hitting a wood. One thing I do like is the head covers they give you for the woods, they are black with a little gold bear on them. I still use the Golden Bear head cover for my 3 wood even though it's not actually a Golden Bear club.

I wrote a separate review on the Golden Bear putter I use. I mentioned in that review that this is my favourite part of the set and the best putter I have ever used. It has excellent balance and plays very well. I think this is probably the club I will be using for the longest period of time into the future.

Golden Bear clubs are a decent price and tend to be good value. There are cheaper clubs on the market but these are of a good standard without being silly money. Value wise they also seem pretty good, I have had mine for a good few years and they are showing very little signs of wear. If you are just starting out in the game of golf or maybe you have been playing a while but want a decent set of clubs then Golden Bear could well be for you. There may come a time when I can afford to go for elite clubs, but until that day I am more than happy with my Golden Bears.
