Garmin nuvi 215 ... bought this GPS in the US for a road trip across California - we drove around Los Angeles and then up to San Francisco and back again using only this to guide us. In the UK, we rely on our in-car GPS, so this was our first experience with a portable Sat Nav. It was for the most part very reliable, but we did have a couple of problems with it. For one, we were unable to specify when we wanted to avoid certain roads - the weekend we drove to San Francisco, there were major works being done on the major bridge into the city, and that path was blocked off completely. Sony NAV-U50 ... was my first Sat Nav and decided to go for the Sony at the time. I soon discovered shortly after buying that Sony haven t mastered the Sat Nav market as well as other brands. Firstly you can only search using 5 postcode digits. You then have to search through several locations if your postcode doesn t appear which can be frustrating and time consuming. I owned the Nav-U50 for 3 years before selling it and during that time Sony only released 1 map update, which is very poor compared with rivals who release at least 1 per year. Garmin nuvi 250 ... bought this to replace my previous Sony NAV-U50 as I heard this had better map coverage for Northern Ireland. Managed to pick it up in an Xmas sale at Harvery Norman for £62, bargain! The Nuvi 250 is very compact and sits very neatly on the windscreen. Finding addresses is very straightforward. Simply tap in the postcode then a house number and away you go. If you don t know the postcode there are other search options available. When you are arriving at your chosen address the Nuvi will alert you and tell you what side of the road the property is on. I found this to be very accurate almost every time.
