Garmin eTrex Legend C ... bought the Etrex Legend C as an upgrade to a Garmin Emap. The unit is smaller, has a colour screen, and seems to go on longer on a set of AA batteries. Uploads now happen over USB, which can also be used to power the unit, and this is a very welcome addition, particularly as many modern laptops don t even have a regular serial port, only USB. The memory capacity of the Legend C is fixed, and it is only 24Mb, and this is one of the main downsides to this unit. It hasn t got enough capacity to store the metroguide map for the whole of the UK, which means that you have to load the device with the regions you ll be travelling in, rather that just putting mapping for the w... Garmin eMap ... Garmin Emap is one of Garmin s early mapping handheld GPS units. The screen is four-level black and white, though it is surprisingly effective. Colour does of course add a lot to the ease of use of mapping, but the Emap s black and white screen is quite large for a handheld GPS which is good for clarity. It comes with a Europe basemap, if it was bought retail in the UK that is. Watch for US models which may not have the level of UK detail you need - you want the International basemap model unless you are planning to replace the maps using Metroguide. Satmap Active 10 ... you re out for a nice walk in the English countryside and it starts to rain...no this is England so it pours down. You are now wondering where you are so you have to get your map out and before you know where you are the map is soaked and is ruined. Ok there is another option and that is buying one of the laminated maps. Yes they are good if it rains or gets muddy but they still have the problem of being big and awkward, plus you still have to work out where about you are.
