... on a proprietary plug-in module - the supplied module is only 16Mb which covers a few counties. I got a 128Mb module from Ebay, and this is big enough to fit the whole of the UK on. The Emap takes data in via the serial port using a cable that has to be purchased separately, and shifting the UK maps takes four hours at the data rate Garmin use. The Garmin Emap is one of Garmin's early mapping handheld GPS units. The screen is four-level black and white, though it is surprisingly effective. Colour does of course add a lot to the ease of use of mapping, but the Emap's black and white screen is quite large for a handheld GPS which is good for clarity. It comes with a Europe basemap, if it was bought retail in the UK that is. Watch for US models which may not have the level of UK detail you need - you want the International basemap model unless you are planning to replace the maps using Metroguide.
