Garmin eTrex ... literally fit in the palm of your hand.

Besides its small size, mariners and outdoorsmen will likely notice the sleek design of the eTrex. All buttons are located on either side of the unit, allowing for simple, one-handed operation that won't obstruct your view of the display. In fact, the eTrex features only five operator buttons for the ultimate in user-friendly design. Thanks to its bright yellow case, the eTrex will be hard to misplace and easy to find in any boat or backpack. The eTrex is completely waterproof so it can take an accidental splash or dunk in the water and still continue to perform.

Inside the eTrex, you will find the proven performance of a 12 parallel channel GPS receiver that will run for about 18 hours on just two AA batteries. No need to worry about dense tree canopy with this unit, the eTrex will continue to maintain a tight satellite lock even while operating in forest-like conditions. The eTrex will store up to 500 user waypoints with graphic icons and boasts Garmin's exclusive TracBack feature that will reverse your track log and help you navigate your way back home. In addition, the eTrex uses animated graphics that will help you identify your marked waypoints quickly and easily.

This is a tough, well designed and compact handheld gps device. Personally I use this for mountain biking, with the GB Topographic map, and find that it accomplishes what I need it to do very well and is extremely accurate. It has a microSD slot which is great, I have a 2gb card and you can easily fit the whole of the GB topo map onto it. Ok so the road routing may not be great but I did not even consider using it in the car when I ordered it. However it does a perfectly acceptable job of navigating for me, although It does lack features of a dedicated sat nav. It is waterproof so ideal for outdoor use, this is especially handy on the bike. It doesn't float but I don't intend on riding ...

Garmin eTrex Legend HCx

Cheap, versatile GPS unit (177 words)

Good value unit with mapping. It locks on quickly and reliably and you'll never get lost again. Also has all the features you're likely to need if you buy it with a City Navigator NT map. There are some problems: the bicycle mounts are poor quality so the unit rattles insufferably in them and may even switch itself off. People have used black insulating tape to pad out the mount, or buy a more robust aftermarket RAM mount which cradles the whole unit. Auto-routing (the follow road navigation option) works like a car satnav but sometimes picks blind alleys, forcing U-turns, and generally the routing is worse than a human could achieve with a map and a grain of common sense. ...

I bought an eTrex about 14 months ago primarily to help me GeoCaching (which is a hobby finding hidden items often in remote or countryside locations around the country). My main use for the eTrex was to use the built in GPS. This model is the cheapest in the range but has a lot of functions that can be useful. I found the GPS pretty good, it normally picks up the signal within 20-30 seconds in clear weather, and it can get a little slower in cloudy condition or under tree cover. The accuracy of the reading in my experience is also very good; I can normally pinpoint locations to within 1-2ft without any problems. It has a nifty little feature to save up to 50 ...
