Advantages: Tomtoms unparelleled usability in a slim chassis at a bargain price

Disadvantages: Missing lots of great features of the new GO510, 710 and 910

If you're looking for a cheap sat nav DO NOT buy anything other than this. Tomtoms are so easy to use it's easy to see how they have come to dominate the market and to buy any other brand is more-than-likely to lead to disappointment.

The current Tomtom range includes the ONE at around £220, the GO 510 around £349, the GO 710 around £399 and the GO 910 around £499. (high street retail prices).

The ONE is the oldest of these but still offers an incredible sat nav experience in the slimist (albeit ugliest) chassis of the range. Very intuitive menu system and easy to read mapping in both 3D and 2D modes. Option to change maps to look like British maps (ie A roads are red, motorways blue and white etc). Clear easy to follow voice instructions are also available for those who want to concentrate on their driving.

Screen is much brighter than the old GO series (300, 500 and 700) allowing for better image in bright conditions.

Reception is also better as it features a much improved chipset over the old models. It picks up and holds a signal much better - even inside in some cases!

If you've got more of a budget then go for the new Tomtoms which feature some great stuff over-and-above the ONE such as the stylish widescreen chassis, built-in handsfree calling, European mapping etc, but if you've got a couple of hundred only to spend you won't go wrong with the Tomtom ONE.

Summary: The only sat nav to consider if your budget is tight.

What is unique about it that we shouldn't buy anything else though? I have a Navman, and am very happy with it!
