      Advantages

      Disadvantages

An excellent angle grinder with ooomph,

Over the summer I had a bunch of full time van dwelling dreadlocked hippies come and work on my Morris Traveller. One of the most important jobs on the list was to replace both the passenger and driver side doors which were held together by rust and felt very precarious when opened and closed. I had sourced lots of Traveller bits thanks to Ebay and picked them all up ready to fit on the Moggie. Getting the doors off was relatively easy (although the twitching of neighbour's net curtains was a bit distracting). The main person working on the Mog was very much a crusty hippy and wore a top hat and cyber goggles. He had brought a selection of his own tools but used some of mine too, and this angle grinder was dragged out of my house to cut bits in the chassis. More on that later....

I bought this grinder based upon a friend's recommendation. I did hunt about online and do a bit of research first and knew that I did not want a Black and Decker because I find that their tools are wimpy and flimsy. I found this for £99 online and it seemed like a good deal for what I was getting. The grinder was bought with the ownership of a classic car being at the front of my mind. The car needed work and I wanted to do some at home.

The Sparky grinder is a 2000 watt angle grinder in black and red. It has a well balanced body and a rubber grip for safety on the main handle. Like all grinders it has an adjustable secondary side handle for the other hand which adds pressure and stability when grinding back metal or stone. It is noisy but all angle grinders are. This one is not too heavy to use for longer periods although I did have to stop a few times due to hand weakness and health issues. The side handle has minimal vibration passing through it even when ploughing through heavy material which I was impressed by. I found that this grinder did the job very efficiently and cleanly with minimum fuss.

The grinder comes with everything you need in the box to get started. You will have to fit the side handle via a bolt. This grinder comes complete with a 230mm disc guard and a 230mm diamond blade. Other blades are available to purchase easily online. The guard is adjustable which is useful if you are working at an unusual angle.

USING IT TO CUT HOLES IN STUFF....

The helpful hippies were now firmly ensconced in the road on a tie dye blanket, with my moggie sandwiched between a huge black Mercedes hippy bus (with chimney puffing out smoke). The car doors were removed and now it was time to cut out the rot around the frame. Now Moggies are heavy cars built with thick metal, nothing like new cars that bend if you look at them wrongly. The angle grinder noisily and impressively cut through the metal showering us all in bright orange sparks. (The curtain twitching increased at this point). There is a certain thrill in using this to create a trail of sparks when it touches metal- I admit I did have a short-lived fantasy of being Lara Croft....

"Sparky" may be the name of the manufacturer but the name really suited this angle grinder, it kicks out a fair few! This hand tool is powerful and impressive. I would recommend it for all metal cutting tasks. I have not tried it on stone. As for the Moggie? She has two new doors that no longer threaten to evict me when driving around corners and the parts cut out by the angle grinder were cut cleanly enough for welding up to be easy peasy.

FIVE noisy and flame-throwing stars for the "Sparky" angle grinder!
