Advantages: smooth skin, nice complexion, good primer
Disadvantages: gold does nothing, not travel friendly, cost
I bought this as well as some other Guerlain products a while ago because I was intrigued to see if they were worth the massive price tag. This was one of the products I was more disappointed with.
The product is a primer with flecks of gold in it designed to mattify your skin and provide a smooth base for make up while giving you a golden glow. I love using a primer so I was massively intrigued by this product and wanted to find out just how it worked exactly.
The product comes in quite a heavy glass bottle, almost a rectangular shape if it weren't for the taper towards the bottom of the bottle. It has a gold metal pump and a gold mental lid, the pump works just as it should although as far as I am concerned it probably squeezes out just a little bit more primer than you, or I, actually need. Overall I think the appearance of the product is very nice, if a little gimmicky. Obviously the gold pump and lid tie in with the title and the contents of the bottle, a primer that contains flecks of 24 carat gold. The bottle is very elegant but the design seems like a predictable choice. I worry a little about the heaviness of the glass bottle as I know with expensive primers that if they are dropped the contents can separate. Fortunately I have not dropped mine so I can't comment on whether this does happen or not, but I have found it in the past with other brand primers. I also think it isn't particularly practical for travelling with and this is a major downside for me. The shape of the bottle is nice and the size is good, at 30ml, to fit in your hand making it easy to use during makeup application. However, the fact that the bottle is glass makes it difficult to retrieve the entire contents and as it gets to 1/4 left it is hard to get it out with the pump. This is disappointing for something so expensive because I would like to get my moneys worth and use the entire bottle.
Upon application the primer feels very silky and velvety to touch. It smooths easily into the skin with relatively little fuss. You only need a small amount, smaller than the bottle dispenses annoyingly, to coat your face effectively. It does provide a matt base for your makeup, smooths and clears your complexion. I think the product itself is rather good as a primer, although there are equally good and cheaper primers out there. My issue is the use of gold in the product. It is designed to brighten your complexion and give you a lovely golden sheen. It never did this for me, it made my face a little bit sparkly which isn't exactly ideal unless you want to look like a 13 year old heading to a disco. The sparkle doesn't really last that long fortunately and if you apply makeup over the top it won't be visible. As far as I'm concerned the product really only fulfils one of the purposes it is designed for - so why is it priced so highly? I'm pretty sure it is just a clever marketing ploy to encourage people to spend money on it. The gold really adds nothing to the primer and I'd really rather it weren't there at all. This may sound very negative but I really can't fault the primary purpose of the product as a primer so although the gold is ineffective I still liked the use the product.
My only other issue is the price. At £35 for 30ml this is an extremely pricey product and really most of what you are paying for is the notion that this contains real gold and this might have some superior beautifying effect on your skin. I would advise that you use this if you have the money to splash out on it but otherwise stick to cheaper primer than offer the same quality without the gimmick.
Summary: A gimmick at a price.
