Advantages: Usable sound, easy to play, simple controls, and vintage appeal

Disadvantages: It's a little difficult to play up past the 15th fret.

This guitar is marketed as an old school replica. Inexperience might lead one to believe he/she would buy a '60s tele in order to achieve old school sounds. This guitar is often viewed as a twangy guitar for rockabilly or country. People associate the tele with a thin, wirey, bright, and jangly sound great for those types of music. It is true that one can achieve those sounds quickly with a tele.
Yet, those are just one side of a tele. The tele can produce sounds perfect for any style of music from rockabilly, jazz, classic rock, and even metal.
Many sounds on old jazz albums are teles. I read somewhere that Joe Pass used a tele on one of his albums. Still today, jazzers like Bill Frissel and Mike Stern play teles. The jazz sound is produced by using the neck pickup. To get more of an R&B vibe, switch the control so you use both pickups.
The tele is quite at home in the hands of a rock player. Much of the guitars on Led Zeplin albums that people assume are Les Pauls are actually telecasters. Throw the mids and bass up on your amp, switch the tele to the bridge position, and listen to the tele growl on a clean channel.
I play all types of music from Brad Paisley to POD. I play lead, rythm, tapping, legato, and chickin' pickin. If I only had one guitar, it would have to be a tele.

Summary: If you could only own one guitar, buy a tele.
