Advantages: A lot of guitar for not a lot of money

Disadvantages: None

I'd been needing to buy a new acoustic guitar for some time, thanks to the long term adoption of my old one by my daughter! Recently I happened to notice an advert for the new Crafter D-8 acoustic in one of my son's guitar mags.

It was hand made, used solid wood all round, looked great and, best of all, the recommended price was just £189, so I was hooked. Without having actually seen the real thing, I ordered one from my local dealer - actually I ordered the D-8EQ, which is the electro-acoustic version which he was able to supply for £199 (apparently there's a special deal on this model - should be around £259 normally).

I was certainly not disappointed when the instrument arrived - this is one time when a magazine ad failed to do justice to the real quality of the product! The guitar is beautifully finished throughout, has great machine heads and even came with good (D'Addario) strings!

The sound, both acoustic and amplified, is excellent - playing action is just right (this so often needs tweaking in relatively inexpensive instruments) and the intonation is very good. The electrics comprise a concealed pickup under the bridge, with an active EQ panel on the top side, (i.e. from a right handed player's perspective) with the jack socket built into the end button for the strap.

If you're looking for a new acoustic guitar, and reluctant to spend a lot of money just for a name, you'll find you can get a lot of guitar for a lot less money with the Crafter D8/D8EQ (actually, the Crafter range is quite massive, so if the straight western style acoustic's not what you're looking for, one of the other models may suit). I believe the D8/D8EQ is a fine instrument offering incredible value for money - it will suit both serious and fun players alike.
