Advantages: Weight, looks, sound, price
Disadvantages: Isn't one of *the* brands to buy, neck may be too chunky for some
First of all the Tanglewood Pioneer II is a very attractive guitar. It is a single cutaway (think Les Paul shape) with two humbuckers and a single coil, to provide a huge range of sounds. It also features a specially designed Wilkinson vibrato (just push in or pull out lever - no screwing).
The neck is fairly chunky, but fits the hand comfortably - definitely Gibson shape rather than Fender (to give a comparison). It is solid mahogany (body and neck) with a set neck (glued in, as Gibsons are), and a rosewood fingerboard, with a beautiful abalone inlay of a climbing rose. The headstock also the company Logo in abalone.
Finally it is finished in a variety of finishes, mine having a tobacco sunburst quilted maple top. It is finished impeccably, and the action is nice and low, though of course it can be raised if you plan to do much slide on it.
It is weighted nicely, and though keeping the Les Paul shape, weighs a fraction, and is a lot slimmer. I find it a lot more comfortable to play, but because of the shape, and the great neck, will feel familiar to Gibson / Epiphone guitars. As far as the sound goes, it is extrememly versatile, I play mainly blues, but it has quite a warm tone, and great sustain, and can cope with everything from metal to really soft stuff.
