Advantages: Fine sound, longevity, good rock n roll heritage
Disadvantages: Not the cheapest set of bass strings on the market
Rotosound Swing Bass 66 Bass Guitar Strings - A bass players review.
Rotosound is one of the most famous names in bass string manufacture, and everyone from the late great John Entwhistle (The Who) to Jimi Hendrix's bass player Noel Redding used them. So, while there are certainly many manufacturers of hi quality bass strings -Rotosound do carry with them a fine pedigree of rock n roll history.
The set I'm reviewing is the Swing Bass 66 selection for 4 string bass.
The strings are gauged (from hi G string to low E) 45, 60, 80 105 respectively. This is a nice selection because the strings are thick enough to produce plenty of punch, without being overly cumbersome and hard work to play on.
At the heart of each string lies a steel core, which is essential for any electric bass string, because it's what really gives the bass guitar pick up magnets the interaction they need to produce a good sound. Around the core is a nickel steel winding which gives the string it's mass and punchy bright sound (in conjunction with the round wound string design).
Each of the 4 strings comes wrapped separately in it's own little envelope, and the 4 strings are housed inside an eco friendly, but more than adequate to protect them - small, thin cardboard box surround - that is torn open to get at the strings within.
I think that Rotosound Swing Bass 66 Bass Guitar Strings are excellent sounding strings, and provided you wipe them down with a cloth every time you've finished playing bass; should last you many months (even years if you're not a serious player).
My only reservations are;
1) You can certainly buy cheaper bass strings, which while probably not being quite as good may be more appropriate if you're on a budget.
2) If you have a fretless bass (as opposed to the 'normal' fretted ones, you might want to opt for a flat wound set instead as they're an awful lot easy to slide about and hold down on a fretless, you'll do less damage to your fret board and you'll also get the smoother sound associated with a fretless more easily).
So in conclusion -This is a great set of bass strings, for premium use applications (provided you have a normal fretted bass), but you can buy cheaper sets if you're on a budget.
Hope you found my review of some help, and good luck with your bargain hunting!!
Best wishes,
Brett
Summary: Basically; Bloody Brilliant Strings -But Not For Budding Bass Players On A Budget!!
