Ah, the Gibson SG Standard. Standard is the keyword here. This Guitar has been a professional favorite since it's introduction in the early 1960's. Angus Young of AC/DC really brought this guitar in the spotlight, and it's one of Gibson's best sellers.

The construction of this guitar is top-notch. From the hand carved mahogany neck and solid body to the immaculate finish, this guitar (and all Gibsons) screams top-of-the-line. It's playability is also top-notch, and the dual Gibson Humbuckers make this guitar suitable for most applications, but especially excel in all the Rock genres from Classic rock to Thrash metal.

As an added bonus, this is one of Gibson's lowest priced hand-made guitars. Yes, you can buy an SG Special for almost half the price of the standard, but when you compare the two, it's clear that the Standard is a far superior instrument. At a street price of about £700, this instrument is a steal.

Also worth looking into is the Gibson SG '61 reissue. Available with a Bigsby-style tremolo (or without), and standard dual PAF humbuckers, the '61 reissue sounds and looks even better than the standard. The price for these extra accoutriments: around an additional 150 - 250 pounds. Not too shabby.

Also worth mentioning is that these guitars are lightweight - probably 1/3 the weight of a Les Paul. If you've ever had a Les Paul strapped to your neck for 3 hours, you'll be able to appreciate what I'm talking about.

I owned an SG for years and I would recommend this instrument to anyone who is serious about their music.

Wow you really do notice the differance when you play one set with an SG, then the next set with another!
But, I had 1 problem with my SG, the neck had too much weight, making it kind of tilt a bit when I wasn't playing it, but, I don't care!
That guitar was my baby!! I was very possesive of it, I was like " Touch it and die" LOL
