Where do i keep my trombone? In the cupboard under the stairs. How often does it see daylight? Once a week. Wherefore we could presume that I dont like the instrument? Not true at all. Its just that its so damn heavy and my cupboard is so full of stuff I put holes in the walls attempting to remove it. I get lessons in my school for my trombone, hence the once a week, apparently i have talent and 'If only you practised you'd be really good'. But as good as my intentions are i just cannot bare to lift the big thing out of its antique case and practise it. Perhaps this is because my school gave me the frankentrombone, the multicoloured trombone made up of pieces of other decaying trombones found out the back of a warehouse. I have three replacement mouth pieces for Gods sake. Recently my teacher found out that I NEVER practise (Iv been faking it for 2years now) and i think ill have to make a bit of an effort now. As much as i cant bring myself to practise, once I pick up teh trombone and play it in my lesson i love it. I LOVE playing the trombone, but I am just too damn lazy to practise. It is not an instrument that you can instantly pick up and play like a violin. And like any other brass instrument you cannot cram loads of playing into the last few minutes before an exam, because your lips play the instrument really they become tired after a while and playin is made almost impossible. Now, the reasonable idea would be to quit. I cant do that either because the head of music is a provo, drinking, smoking, cursing MAD priest who would eat you as soon as look at you, me and zooropa are convinced that he has plans to eat our faces. He runs orchesta and although he is the most inspiring, funny and generally sound person I can think of he does insist on you playing your instrument until you leave the school. That and going to orchestra, you NEVER miss orchestra because if you do he will hunt you down and you will fo
rever be looking over your back. Zooropa once missed out on orchesta and the mad priest jumped out on him and hit him in the eye with the irovy conducting, turned bad player eye poking out stick. Then he quizzed him for 10mins about the validity that he had gone for an eye checkup. May not sound bad but this is a menacing guy with wild staring eyes and teh feeling that he would actually punch you, hed just go and say teh rosary afterwards. In fact im not even sure he is a priest, i think hes just pretending as a bet in a pub one night 'Ahha, i bet you cant be a priest for your whole life and still act like this, hahaha'. Bad bet... In conclusion I really like playing the trombone but would not suggest it to anyone who is not prepared to put in the work. It can be very rewarding and enjoyable but if first years are passed over you in getting sparkling new trombones and you are left with one stuck together by selotape it can be very annoying, i can tell you. And btw, if anyone from my school sees this have a laugh and leave it. This is all done in good humour and i dont want to get in any serious trouble for this

I had been looking for a new symphonic bore Trombone for years and never quite had the money to get to London to look for one in the shops up there. I had heard about the Conn series, especially the Conn88H. A beautiful instrument that I sometimes borrowed from my teacher. And so I got to London, looking for a new Trombone, I tried out several including the hallowed Conn88H, benchmark for the tenor trombone- but the Open wrap version caught my eye. The 88H is the closed wrap model and, as with the majority of closed wrap Bb/F trombones is a little stuffy in the lower registers with the plug open. However, the open wrap generally stops this and provides a much clearer sound when the plug is opened. The tone is beautifully warm and the response is wonderous in all registers. It is a pleasure to practice on (which is a real bonus) and in concerts- well- I have just played Carmina Burana and it was magnificent. A great trombone with beautiful tone, and no fuzzy bits when the plug is open. Get one.
