Initially the first few days of learning to play the trumpet are nothing short of painful, on the ears and on the heart strings. My daughter (Aged 10), when she could actually manage to produce any sound at all, produced a variety of painful squeaks, squawks and hisses. She had to learn the ...more

Premium Review Trumpets: Should you let your child learn to play the trumpet? (522 words)
by - written on 13/09/08 (Very useful, 322 readings)
Rating:

Trumpets are members of the brass instrument family and stand among the oldest instruments. Constructed from brass tubing bent to form a series of rectangles with a cylindrical bore, the trumpet is played by blowing (more like buzzing) down the mouth piece and pressing down on the three valves in various combinations to form notes. One of the benefits of this instrument are that it requires very little putting together in order to begin playing it. Unlike instruments such as clarinets which come apart into several segments and require lubrication to ease together, the only part which detaches from the trumpet when stored is the mouthpiece. The trumpet is ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Blow your own! (466 words)
by - written on 11/01/01 (Very useful, 309 readings)
Rating:

As a nine-year old at the time, the main reason I wanted to learn to play the trumpet was because they make so much blimming noise! A couple of lessons down the line and I found that it can be quite hard to make that noise, especially a controlled one. As with many instruments, trumpets are hard to get started on, which is frustrating at first but I recommend that persistence can be very rewarding. Trumpets are fairly versatile. They can be played solo, although piano accompaniment is often more appreciative. Trumpets are vital to the brass section of the orchestra and usually get a lot of the exciting parts. On the other hand, a trumpet works as an excellent ...  Read the complete review

I've always aasked and never got a straight forward what trumprt sounds best A brass old or a sliver plated one??????? What's the difference i hear you cry, well the straight forward answer is a silver plated one is a couple of hundred pounds dearer!!!!!! I've played both and currently own an American Silver plated one and this has given me more joy than a plain old standard brass one. the look and feel of a silver trumpet is just beyond belief, just opening my black case gives me great joy!! Taking the shinning silver trumpet out of the case is brillant. YES you get asked loads of questions about it and so many people want to play ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review mouthpiece stuck !! (92 words)
by - written on 29/05/01 (Useful, 599 readings)
Rating:

As a brass instrumental teacher in schools a major problem I come across is the problem of mouthpieces being jammed into the instrument. Please be extremely careful when trying to remove a stuck mouthpiece. Never use pliers or grips to free it. Never put the mouthpiece in a vice as this will damage the mouthpiece and may even twist some of the joints on the trumpet. Your brass tutor may have access to a mouthpiece extractor. This is the only recommended solution to removing a stuck mouthpiece. ...  Read the complete review

Trumpets: THE MAGINIFICENT TRUMPET (222 words)
by - written on 17/03/02
Rating:

Trumpet and Cornet Trumpeters have an unprecedented array of instruments that enable them to meet today's exacting performance demands (see Fig. 3.1). In fact, trumpets are now found pitched in the keys of every scale note of a full octave above the traditional Bb instrument. These fall into two basic categories: Bb and C trumpets for general use, and higher trumpets pitched in D, Eb, E, F, G, piccolo BC/A, and C for orchestral and solo literature demanding a high tessitura. It is fair to ask why so many trumpets are necessary. The answer can best be illustrated through an example. While a strong player might possibly be able to sustain ...  Read the complete review
