Advantages: good variety of sounds, great price
Disadvantages: can de-tune after re-stringing
The Yamaha Pacifica 112 is often classed as a 'beginners' guitar due to it simple look and budget price. However, I disagree with this as overall it is a very sturdy guitar which will offer many years of advanced guitar playing if treated well.
The pickups on this guitar are 2 single coils, and 1 humbucker. This means that the pickup switch can be adjusted to produce a range of sounds from twangy country, to a 'dirty' rock sound. I personally love that the pickup switch can be placed in five different positions as it allows me to play in a range of styles, from Rock to more acoustic sounding music (my personal two favourite genres). The volume and tone knobs allow easy manipulation of the sounds, whilst the volume knob can also be used to adjust the level of distortion effect (if being used).
The appearance of the 112 is basic, but thats all that is needed. It has dotted frets, with double dots on the 12th fret to mark the octave, which are especially helpful to a newer guitarist. The neck is a bolt on, which doesn't produce as much sustain as a set neck, but can easily be replaced if damaged. The body is a classic "strat" shape, which a pleasant curvature where your arm lies.
The only disadvantage the comes to mind is that when re-strung, it can tend to go out of tune fairly easily (especially when bending the strings). But then again, most guitars do.
All in all, I've owned this guitar for over four years, and it still sounds as good as when I bought it. I've experimented with all sorts of effects on the 112, and it handles them perfectly. Buy this if you don't have a great knowledge on guitars and want something with a great sound (and amazing price at £170-200), or are looking for a second guitar that can be trusted as a back-up for gigs. I personally would use this as my main 'gig-ing' guitar.
5/5
Summary: A highly recommended guitar for beginners, and even advanced players.

- 25/08/09 A lot of so called lower range guitars are more than adequate, even for gigs. I used to use a cheap old Encore for my back up for years just to give the old guy a run out and it still did the job no problem. Too much is made about what people play when it should be how they play. |

- 23/08/09 Good review and Welcome to Dooyoo
We use the Pacifica 112 in schools basically because it is relatively easy to play on as well as being suitably lightweight. Heavier electric guitars can be a nightmare to play so its a good alternative hence the "beginners" tag.
Adding the price to your review would be good here. |
