Ojon Hydrating Thickening Shampoo
by beautybabiex Admittedly, I did not buy this. I took it from my mothers bathroom earlier in the month because my own ran out - but I did give it back eventually (and half empty!). I had never really suffered with bad hair until I began to dye it. Darker didn't do much but when I began my blonde process its become so ruined I'm wondering why ... I ever dyed it in the first place! My mother also suffers from the same issue as she has been white blonde for the last 35 years. Her hair is now very thin and damaged hence her buying of products like this. The Packaging As you can see, the product comes in a long thin bottle. It is quite thick plastic which first made me wonder how much liquid there was for the price we paid - but a little goes a long way as you will read in a minute. The shampoo bottle is slightly opaque but you can still see the liquid inside and the conditioner bottle is almost completely transparent. It makes it easy to tell the two apart from a distance in the bath/shower. The lid of the bottle is brown and clear, it flips so that it is easy to close and open. I have a hatred for screw top shampoo/conditioner because when your hands are wet it is semi-impossible to open! But luckily this one is very simple and causes no frustration. Although, I find sometimes more of the product ends up in the lid as it doesn't flip completely open. Scent I originally didn't like the scent as it is quite woody and organic. It still lingers on my hair the next day and I have been complimented on it by friends sat next to me at college (they caught a waft!). It also stayed in my bathroom due to the steam which was nice as I didn't need to spray anything. Using the product When my hair was wet, I put a tiny amount no bigger than a 20 pence on my hand then smoothed and massaged it into my hair. The product lathered up well and the fragrance was instant. Normally expensive products don't lather as it is a trait to cheaper products so you think your hair is being cleaned better. I then proceeded to use the matching conditioner and rinsed both out. After drying my hair, it felt so soft and nourished. My friend cuts and colours my hair and she even noticed a difference. Quite glad that it is getting better because I was getting sick of putting my hair up every day. I love that the product is also 100% natural so I am not rubbing anything bad into my hair. I hate knowing I'm using loads of chemicals. The liquid is quite thick and creamy so it doesn't run off your hands and all over the place, its quite neat and tidy. The bottle has lasted in my home for a good few months now purely down to the fact that you do not need much in your hair for it to go a long way. I would advise making sure it is completely washed out as it can leave patches greasy. I find that my crown gets bad sometimes if I don't scrub it out, as the shampoo is thick. Price & Availability Whilst watching QVC over last Christmas (which she never does so this was a lucky visit), my mum saw the Ojon range. Previously neither of us had heard of the brand but we are now very fond of their products. This shampoo comes in a pack along with the conditioner for £34. There are also others which are good for improving damaged hair if you check the Ojon website (or eBay and Amazon). Admittedly it is a lot to spend on a product if you aren't sure whether it will benefit you, but this has lived up to expectations well. The fact it lasts a long time means I didn't spend my usual up to £10 a month on shampoo and conditioner from the high street - the price of buying high street each month adds up to the same as the Ojon products if you think of the life span of Ojon. Ojon Hydrating Thickening Shampoo
by Dryad I seem to have set myself off on a hair care reviewing spree. A few years ago I bought myself an Ojon set comprising of a tub of the conditioning oil (which I've spoken about in an earlier review), a bottle each of the hydrating and thickening shampoo and conditioner and a half full size bottle of restorative hair serum. For me this ... was a very expensive investment, if you've read any of my other hair product reviews you might be aware that I went through a period where my hair was falling out, and what was left was rough and crispy. This was the reason I splashed out on this set, it was after I'd used the Jeunesse hair mask I've already spoken about, and I wanted something to keep my hair on the right track. This shampoo if bought alone costs around £18 for only 250mls! I know, ridiculous isn't it. Even in my darkest hair hour I would never pay that much for a shampoo. I'd bought the set primarily for the conditioning oil, but it was on a great offer at QVC and at the time I paid about £29 for the whole set. Which while still expensive was good value as the oil alone now cost that much (and now costs £32 ish) and lasts about 6 months of regular use. At the time the offer meant that the shampoo, conditioner and serum were 'free'. I've just checked up on the QVC website to look at current prices, and this shampoo is no longer available there, but seems to have been replaced with something called Dry Recovery Shampoo! I don't know if the formulation is different of if they've just re-branded it. It can still be found on ebay usually as part of a shampoo/conditioner set, for varying price points, I saw one today at time of writing for about £13 (with 100% positive feedback). Enough of prices already. When buying as a set of shampoo and conditioner, which seems to be the most common way this is sold, I would rather the conditioner contained more product than the shampoo. If your hair is short this wouldn't be a problem but if its below collar level then you probably use more conditioner than shampoo. I suppose we could always buy extra conditioner...at this price though probably not, ouch... and there I go on about the price again. The Ojon range is developed from one oil produced from the nut of the Ojon tree, hence the name. It came about either after a Canadian (Denis Simioni) with wanderlust came across a tribe in Central America who had spectacularly healthy luscious hair, the name of their group in itself means people of the beautiful hair (Tawera), or when the same Denis was given a jar of the paste by a relative after a holiday in Honduras where it was being sold in jars on the street. When he realised the great effects he went in search of the ... and then the first story kicks in but the tribe is now called the Miskito. The first mystical tail I heard on QVC the second (which has more of the ring of truth to it) I found online. The oil is very high in beneficial lipids, which penetrate the hair well and help to temporarily seal the cuticles giving it a smoother finish, and protects against further environmental damage. I like the no nonsense bottle this shampoo comes in, the plastic is sturdy but has a soft touch feel to it. It's translucent so you can see the nice yellowish liquid through it and be well aware of how much you have left. The flip top lid looks sturdy, but it's not particularly, I'd managed to break mine within a few uses. I like the scent of this shampoo, it's little hard to describe, but it has none of the slightly chemical 'shampoo' smell that you often get underlying any fragrances added. It all smells fresh, natural and a little bit delicious. The smell doesn't seem to be a fragrance as such you could believe it's the natural smell of the ingredients. At first I doubted this because pure Ojon is rank (in my opinion) and smells a bit smoky and coffeeish but not in a good way (for me, some people quite like it). However Simioni says that the scent has not been tampered with and as other products than the pure oil in the range contain between 15 and 25% Ojon oil then perhaps the smell has been tempered by the other ingredients after all there is a hint of Ojon smokiness but it's not overpowering. Whatever fragrance there is doesn't linger for long on the hair once it's dried. I found this quite difficult to lather, and occasionally swapped bottles because I thought (incorrectly) that I was using the conditioner. I did over use it a little as I'm used to having a lather as a guide line to where the product is spreading and working on my hair. There was some lather but it took a bit of working up. It rinsed out well, but I thought my hair felt 'heavy' as if it wasn't properly cleansed. Because of the what I deemed to be the disappointing result of the washing experience I didn't expect much when my hair was dry and was a little concerned that it would look lank and or greasy. (I did usually follow up with the Ojon conditioner, but that's a different review). Boy did I have a surprise when my hair was dry, it was gorgeous. It added shine in a lovely natural way, most shampoos and conditioner which are shine enhancing do this by using dimethicone or other silicones, which work but don't enhance the actual base condition of the hair. This however brought out the natural radiance that healthy hair has. Some Ojon products do contain dimethicone but not in this shampoo formulation. The biggest change however was that my hair was beautifully soft, the sort you'd quite like to bury your face in. It didn't stop the fine flyaway hairs (that were just growing back after their abortive suicide attempt) from standing up for fine weather, but it wasn't frizz as such it was just short fine regrowth. One big fail for this though is the thickening claims, for me it really did nothing in that respect. Even after using the full bottle and the conditioner I noticed no difference in the volume of my hair. It did look it's best though, had a nice feel and a bit of bounce, so didn't lie 'flat' which can make the hair look thinner. If you are buying it primarily for thickening I would look elsewhere. If like me you want something very hydrating and conditioning then this a good option. My hair was easy to brush, and style if I wanted to. It had 'swish' and didn't feel heavy or lank one little bit. If this product wasn't so expensive I'd probably still be using it (once or twice a week as a maintenance programme). One thing I don't mind about the price is that it isn't all huge profit margin (though I'm sure a fair wodge of it is). Simioni has built a good working relationship with the people who produce the raw oil from the nuts for him (the original tribe, mostly). The network of families (quite a lot of them, hundreds of families in fact) get paid fairly for the ingredients and their work, a proportion of the profits from the sale of Ojon also go to the people and helps to maintain the eco system and traditional way of life. A lot of money is spent so that the oil is hand extracted in the authentic way to maintain the original potency of the product. The company also limits the harvest to protect the natural resources. So the initial production costs are quite high. It's great for curly or very wavy hair as that tends to be dryer and more porous making it more prone to damage (along the length of the hair even if the scalp is oily) and gives it a lovely natural bounce and softness. I wouldn't buy this again as a stand alone item, not because the product isn't good but purely because it's a lot of money to spend on a shampoo (as above if it were cheaper I probably would buy it). I think if your hair is longer conditioner is the most important thing and not shampoo. As long as the cleansing isn't so harsh that it strips the hair then I think almost any shampoo will do, because a good conditioner is what makes the difference. I do very much admire the ethical way in which this is produced - if you believe what they say, (there is also no animal testing). It's a very natural product and the results are very good, but if I buy from the Ojon range again I'd rather direct my pennies at the pure oil treatment. Recommended for short hair that doesn't require conditioning after every wash, or extremely dry hair that needs all the tlc it can get. Read the complete review |

Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment
by beautybabiex I have to admit, I am not the best of people when it comes to hair care. I use products but not on a regular basis as I forget, I dye it a lot, strip it when I don't like the colour and use heat daily. All of which may look lovely for a short space of time but it does destroy my hair! My mum brought this product from QVC one ... day as she has very fine hair due to years of damage. All the perms and colours through her teens and 20's didn't help! The product claims to restore condition, invigorate and hydrate your hair making it more manageable. The treatment comes in a clear tub with a brown lid, although I think now the tub is orange (but that could of been an old stock or limited edition I saw as it was in TK Maxx). The lid has the name of the product and brand on top. Inside is the incredibly thick substance and a wide toothed wooden comb. The product smells quite unusual, my mum thinks its unpleasant but I think it smells a little wood like. To apply this product, you need to apply it to your roots and spread it to the ends of your hair. They recommend to leave it on for 5 minutes, but I tend to leave it for 15-30 for better effects. I would also say to make sure hair is not dripping wet, as the product will glide off with the water and not go into your hair follicles like it needs to. The substance can be quite thick at first I found, but if you leave it in a bathroom that isn't cold, it softens up and its easier to get out. After washing the product out of my hair (which I tend to spend about 5 minutes doing to make sure its all gone), I don't feel the need to use shampoo or conditioner as my hair feels really soft and not tangled. I have to admit I noticed a very big difference, my hair felt thicker and in a lot better condition instantly! I tried to avoid straightening or blowdrying it as much to give my hair a better chance and I would honestly use this product forever - its a miracle worker! I have had the tub and used it once a month for about 8 months now, its lasting well and I still have about half left. The tub will last differently depending on frequency and amount used though obviously. TK Maxx occasionally have the products for sale, but the price varies. I saw it at £22.50 and £24.00 so I wouldn't buy it from there. On QVC and in John Lewis an 100ml tub costs £29.50 (with postage cost if you buy from QVC). Read the complete review |
