Advantages: Good quality, smells heavenly, nice bottle, great price
Disadvantages: I have since found better shampoos for a similar price
- Why I Bought -
For the last couple of years I purchased shampoo and conditioner from the Alberto Balsam brand as it is often possible to get them for £1 per bottle which is what I am usually prepared to pay. I have always thought the quality to be good. I picked up a bottle of the Coconut and Lychee shampoo a few months ago as I actually thought it was conditioner in the shop! It is 'pampering and nourishing for all hair types'.
- The Packaging -
The shampoo comes in a transparent plastic bottle which is good as you can easily see how much is left. You can see the clear/white liquid inside which looks nice and simple. At the top there is a black plastic cap lid which is easy to open/close and doesn't leak shampoo. The opening of the bottle is quite small so a controlled about of shampoo is delivered when the bottle is squeezed. The bottle itself is tall and slim which looks nice as doesn't take up too much space around the bath. On the front of the bottle is the Alberto Balsam logo, the name of the shampoo, that it is 'pampering and nourishing for all hair types' and it contains coconut & lychee extracts. I can't say that this is a scent I would usually go for but there wasn't much choice in the shop I bought it in and I had totally run out of conditioner at the time. Imagine how annoyed I was when I got home and saw I had bought a shampoo by mistake! There is a picture of two halves of a coconut. On the back there is a list of ingredients and a bit of information about the shampoo such as that it is heavenly scented shampoo that nourishes and adds shine. It also says it uses the same ingredients as more expensive brands which certainly sounds good to me. I think overall the bottle is fine. It doesn't look like it cost a mere £1 but neither does to look like a really expensive brand. It is functional but still looks reasonably attractive. The colours used are very neutral so it looks fine in my cream and beige bathroom. I like my shampoo and conditioner to match and the conditioner in the same range does have a matching bottle, perhaps this is how I got confused!
- Shampooing -
The shampoo is clear but with a hint of white and I would describe it as having a medium consistency. When applied to my hair this lathers up well but doesn't feel as luxurious as the Palmolive shampoo I have been using recently. I would describe the smell as sweet, creamy and tropical. I can definitely smell the coconut and to be honest they are right it is heavenly! It is easy to wash the shampoo out again and I feel that my hair is thoroughly cleaned after using this. I always apply an Alberto Balsam conditioner afterwards.
- The Results -
After using this I would say my hair does feel soft, clean and nourished. There is absolutely nothing to complain about with this shampoo but I do feel the Palmolive shampoos achieve better results for me. With Alberto Balsam my hair feels good after washing it but it doesn't feel as sleek and smooth as with the Palmolive one. I don't like to straighten and style my hair everyday so I need to achieve the best possible results from my shampoo and conditioner. The heavenly smell lingers on my hair for up to two days which is when I would usually wash my hair again anyway. While my hair feels nourished to a certain extent I wouldn't describe this shampoo as pampering. It has never caused me any irritation. As I also use the conditioners from the same range it is hard to say if the results are down to the shampoo, conditioner or both. However, I would say this shampoo achieves good results but not the best.
- Priced Availability -
This shampoo is available from most supermarkets and is usually priced at £1. There are often offers such as two bottles for £1.80 or four bottles for £3 which makes it even better value. I think this is a great price for a good quality shampoo.
- Would I Recommend? -
I would recommend this shampoo as I think it is good quality, smells amazing (heavenly!), the bottle looks reasonably attractive and the price is great. I have used this range for a few years and have always been pleased with it. However, I have now found something better for the same price so Alberto Balsam would now be my second choice. If buying from the range again I would certainly choose Coconut and Lychee.
Summary: A heavenly coconut shampoo which is pretty good for the price
