Advantages: Nice smell, good price
Disadvantages: Not as cleansing as some shampoos
If I was asked what the ideal fruit smell for shampoo would be for me, I would name something exotic and interesting, for example, coconuts. What would not immediately spring to mind is "Apples! Apples, for sure! I want my hair as delicious as a Granny Smith!". Some, or should I say most, hair care brands probably know this, and have steered clear of the apple scent for their shampoos, preferring to stick to scents that the majority of the population find to be more 'glamorous'.
So when I saw this Juicy Green Apple shampoo by Alberto Balsam on the shelf at a supermarket for the reasonably cheap price of £1, I was slightly intrigued. Despite the apple being a very common fruit, it is less commonly seen (by me, anyway) in shampoo, so I was slightly curious about how it would perform. This, along with the low price and the nice aesthetic effect of the bottle, pushed me to buy a 400ml bottle at the checkout. I had never bought from the Alberto Balsam range, though the brand name did ring some bells, so I was slightly apprehensive about the credibility of the whole product.
It was bottled in securely; the packaging was simple looking, but this gave it a pleasant, almost cosy look to it. The black cap was easy to take off, unlike some other shampoo bottle lids which just stay stubbornly closed! It is also very easy to squeeze some shampoo onto your hand- and you really don't need that much to fully cleanse your hair with this. Altogether, the product packaging gives it the feeling of something simple, but effective; it is obviously not a luxury good, but instead it has an air of something more natural and caring.
So what about the smell? Is it as pleasant as it should be? Well, to answer this, I received quite a pleasant surprise when I used this product for the first time; it had quite a tangy, fresh apple smell and it DID smell quite delicious. It smelt refreshing and natural, and not at all like the chemical like smell from some 'higher class' shampoo. The smell lingers on your hair for not that long, but for long enough; long enough for people who walk past to wonder: "Hmm... what a delightful apple smell- I wonder where it comes from?". The smell of this shampoo grants you the natural confidence that several more sophisticated shampoos (some many times more expensive than this simple product) fail to give. Despite what I said earlier about the peculiarity of having some shampoo that smells like apples, this seems to work for this particular shampoo, leaving your hair smelling delicious and fruity fresh... what more could you ask from a £1 shampoo?
The translucent green gel like shampoo (it has a nice cool and smooth texture) can easily be massaged into your scalp- it feels very refreshing against your skin, and you end up with lovely smelling apple flavoured foam. This can be easily rinsed off, leaving your hair moderately cleansed. However, I do not think this cleans quite as well some other shampoos I have tried; it is not fantastic. But those shampoos mostly cost over twice as much, and really, you DO get what you pay for (and with this shampoo, you do not really have to pay a lot).
So, in conclusion, I have enjoyed both this product and its refreshing, fruity apple smell. At £1 per 400ml bottle (which can actually last for up to a month, so I would call it very good value for money!) you really can't be too disappointed by your product. However, though it cleans satisfactorily, it is not absolutely fantastic, and sometimes my hair does still feel a little uncleaned after washing. For this reason, I can only give it 4 out of 5 dooyoo stars.
Summary: Nice apple smelling shampoo!
