Advantages: Cheap, cleans hair

Disadvantages: Smell not to everyones taste, shampoo quite thin

I recently needed a new shampoo and as always I have a look to see what is on offer in Tesco and found the Alberto Balsam shampoos were on buy 4 for £3. They normally retail for 95p each from Tesco which is quite cheap for a 400ml bottle. Having never tried any of their products before I thought I would give them a try. I chose the Tea Tree Tingle Herbal Shampoo because it reminded me of the more expensive Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Shampoo which my husband uses. I was curious to see whether a product that is a fraction of the price would be anything like the more expensive Paul Mitchell Shampoo.

The shampoo helps promote healthy hair and scalp. It gently cleanses and strengthens with pro-vitamin B5. Alberto Balsam also say that the shampoo "will make you want to leap out of bed and awaken your senses" !! I can honestly say that it did not have this effect on me, I still reluctantly drag myself out of bed in the morning but once up and washing my hair the shampoo does help wake you up thanks to its refreshing and stimulating smell.

They say that it contains most of the same ingredients that are found in more expensive brands and sure enough it contains tea tree and peppermint extracts which are also in the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shampoo.

The shampoo comes in a slim plastic bottle which is slightly opaque. There is a flip open lid at the top of the bottle. The shampoo itself is a green colour and is quite a thin consistency, I would have preferred it to be a bit thicker as it runs off your hand if you are not quick enough getting it onto your hair. I think the consistency of the shampoo does indicate that this is a cheaper product. The shampoo has a fresh fragrance a sort of tea tree/minty smell, it's quite refreshing, perhaps not my favourite smell but then I don't really like my hair smelling minty fresh.

Directions are simply to use a "good sized dollop" yes that's what it says on the bottle! Lather and then rinse. There is a tea tree conditioner as well but I haven't tried that with it.

The shampoo lathers up well and as I said the smell is quite refreshing and does wake you up, always a bonus in the mornings. After using my hair feels clean and fresh. I wouldn't say that it feels any softer after using and I would still recommend you use a conditioner with this product. It is definitely not as good as the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shampoo but as it's a fraction of the price I am not really surprised. It's a good value no frills shampoo which gives you clean hair and a fresh smell but not my favourite scent. Its not one I would rush out to buy again but it is a good shampoo for the money.

Summary: A cheap tea tree shampoo from Alberto Balsam
