Hair gel is not something that I thought I would buy for myself or need, but I have. I got bored with my hair ( probably a mid-life crisis ) and over the last couple of years have had different hair cuts long and short and have bought two or three types of hair gel.
This Vo5 gel is a styling gel and it says it is firm hold. I tend to have longish hair, at least not short back and sides so according to what I have read I need a light or medium strength gel so the hair can still move, make sense ? This is all new too me, so I just bought some and tried it.
One I don't think used properly, another one recently was extra strong and was on sale, that is okay and my hair still moves so it seems the strength is maybe not that relevant.
The reason I chose this was that it was on sale ,and it's blue and it said firm holding gel and it appealed to me. This comes in a standard see through plastic 200 ml tube with a screw top. It normally costs about £3 depending where you buy it.
It is blue in colour and has bubbles in it, the tube it comes in is see through.
It contains something called 'Aqauscreen' which gives the firm long lasting hold.
This VO5 styling gel does work, you need short hair or apply a large amount onto wet hair then style it. Other gels I have used hold my hair longer and do not have a messy feeling in my hands or hair.
This is an okay product, but I think it has been brought to the market to cash in on hair gel rather than because it is a great product. I have used another Alberto hair gel, that was less sticky and held my hair for the whole day, that was ultra strong styling gel, again blue and on sale.
I think you have to find the right gel for your hair, I seem to need a very strong gel, this one was not quite strong enough , also the VO5 formula had something extra which gave it a chemical , sticky feel that there other gels have not got.
I will keep trying new gels that are on sale, so I can find a few more that I might like, and also read up a bit more about them. This one is okay and will hold your hair in place, but it may not feel as good as other gels.
Until recently I had never used hair gel but a few months ago I decided to start trying to do different things with my hair. After having it cut I decided to pop into my local convenience store and pick up some gel. This was the only one they had in the shop and it cost about three quid. I had seen V05 products advertised on the telly so recognised this as coming from a 'premium' brand.
After getting home and having a shower I applied it to my hair as per the instructions. The first thing I noticed about the gel was that it has quite an unpleasant smell and I found it a bit off putting. My hair is very thick but as I had it very short I didn't think this was going to be a problem. After applying this to my hair it took a fair bit of fussing to get to how I wanted it but it only lasted for a minute till it went flat.
I thought I hadn't applied enough so I went back to the bathroom and put a bit more on but just couldn't get it to stay up. I was really disappointed, I know three pounds isn't that much money but when you spend it on something like this you expect a lot better.
I was going to send it back to 'Alberto' with a letter of complaint but it turns out my mother in law uses this product on a regular basis and is happy with the results. She has medium length hair and uses it to style her hair down rather than up. As my mother in law is happy with it I will give it two stars instead of one but I think a product that says it is firm hold on the front should be better.
I have short hair and use hair gels every single day, even on days when I am not going out as I like to style it and I do like to take care of my appearance as it is important to me and I bought this one a few weeks ago to try as I like the V05 products as I find it is suitable for my hair and ones that I usually work very well indeed for my hair.
It comes in a plastic tube with a flip top, it is a nice blue colour and has the writing on the front and looks quite stylish and I paid around £2.70 for a 200ml tube and it is available from most supermarkets or chemists and ready available.
Inside it is a clear gel and it has a nice fragrance and smells very refreshing and quite a strong smell for the price and smells like an aftershave smell is the only way I can describe it. The gel has a nice texture and is nice and soft but it is quite sticky too. Only a little is needed and a little goes a very long way, all that is needed is to squeeze a little from the tube onto the ends of the fingers and rub gently into the hair.
The gel is quite a runny consistency with this one but it is not so runny that it drips from the tube and I have found that once I have placed it onto my fingers it has reached my hair with no problems at all. The quality is a good one and I think it is good value for money.
It is more of a wet look gel rather than a dry one with this one, it does give a shine to my hair and it has styled it in the way that I like it to be. This one does not have so much a firm hold as it indicates as I buy other brands and the hold has been much firmer and so I only usually buy this one when I see it on special offer and I bought the one I am using at the moment for only a £1 from my local shop and so I bought it because I knew I would use it as I have many times before.
I think if you are looking for a more firmer hold for your hair then this one probably would not be so suitable as some other brands on the market but if you are just wanting one that can give a wet look etc then this one would be fine.
It is quite sticky on the hair when it has dried but it can be easily washed at the end of the day in the normal way as most other products and I have never had any problems washing it from my hair.
It has kept my hair in place but not as much as some of the other products I buy and so for that reason I am deducted one star.
I would recommend it to others to buy but not if you are looking for a longer lasting hold because this one I would describe as a more a medium hold than a firm hold.
I rate it 4 stars.
My son is a poser!! there Ive admitted it. My beautiful, hansome five year old boy knows he's beautiful and hansome and has wisely come to the conclusion, that to get by in life you have to have great charm and a twinkle in your eye. This is why I find collecting him from school like the closing credits from the Benny Hill show with all the girls in his class chasing after him. (I kid you not!!)
My son has a strict grooming regime which he sticks too before school every morning. This includes spiking his hair with gel and spraying himself with his own ck1 aftershave. I have spent countless amounts of money of different hair products for him and one of these products was vo5 firm hold styling gel.
I payed over £2 for this 200ml product in my local supermarket. V05 which is produced by Alberto claims to be offering you this gel with an added promise of being able to create any style you want too whilst maintaining great power, style and finish. Now considering I was buying this for a five year old boy, I was not particularly intrested in its ability to add fullness and definition. All I was looking for was something that would spike his hair up in the morning and smell nice.
When opening the flip top lid at the bottom of the plastic 200ml bottle. I was pleased with the rather deep and spicy smell of the gel. However I do think it is rather a masculine smell and wouldnt be very happy to go around with this smell on my hair.
The gel came out of the bottle quite easily. It was clear in colour and quite runny in consistency. It wasnt sticky on the hands, which I was pleased about because I hate that. When I applied this to my sons hair. It did stick up slightly, but I wasnt happy that it left his hair looking wet. There was certainly not the holding power that had been promised on the packaging. It was good enough for my son, but on a mans hair I am sure if they cared about their appearance, they would not be entirely happy with this product.
I have found that cheaper own brand gels are just as effective as this product. This gel just makes your hair look wet and slightly sticky. I can not see how this gel could mould and style hair into place. I just dont think it has the oomph to be able to carry a style. I wouldnt buy this product again as I found it fell way short of the desired outcome.
I had to go to my local shop the other day because my son had his hair cut and wanted it spiked. My lkocal shop only had this brand in. I thought that it wouldnt matter because he was only a young boy and wouldn't be used often so it would last me a while for the 2.49p that I paid for it.
It stated that it was firm hold which was good due to other brands didn't seem to keep his hair in place. It isn't a wet look gel so it should make him look presentable. It also came in a squeezy bottle with a secure cap, so I could easily style my sons hair without getting my hands in a mess and just using my fingers.
I got it out of the bag when we arrived at his grandmothers to shut him up moaning about his hair. I squoze the bottle and to my surprise it didn't gush out I got just enough to do his hair. Once I had done his hair I noticed that it did make his hair look wet and it held it solid, my son seemed impressed by this but I wasn't. I went to wash my hands but even after washing them my fingers still felt sticky.
After a while I noticed that his hair was falling and looking greesy I took him upstairs to wash it out it looked a mess. I was not impressed with this at all. It didn't do what was stated on the bottle at all.
The directions of use and the contents of the gel was clearly explained which was good and the form of bottle that it was in was great but for the product its self it was not worth the money and I have thrown mine away.
I have the relative misfortune (some would say different!) of having rather hard to control, curly hair when it starts to go longer than about an inch on top. As a result, to avoid more regular cuts, I try to use gel or wax to control my hair and give it hold for my working day. Some products work, some don't, and sadly this V05 doesn't really completely do the job for me.
For a few hours, it's a great product, giving my hair a sort of wet look and holding firm, but any form of touching it seems to make the firm hold disappear, and it just ends up feeling and looking greasy as opposed to controlled. Even without touching, it has a lack of hold once the afternoon comes around, bearing in mind I usually apply it at about 8.30 in the morning.
Applying it is very easy, with the flip top nozzle meaning you can just squeeze and the gel comes out, and not too quickly either. Thumbs up for the containe, then! The gel feel slimy on your hands, and once you've run it through your hair or applied as much of it as you want, the problem is that your hands are greasy with the gel, and then subsequently sticky if it tries on your hands, giving you a tacky feel to your hands. You'll need warm water to wash it off, but this isn't too much of a bind.
The gel smells quite nice, though, not too chemically, but with enough of a pleasant smell to not worry about whether someone is going to turn their nose up at you when you walk near them. It is easy to wash out, and I don't wash my hair every day, so this is ideal. However, the main problem is still that it doesn't hold for long enough once touched, and winds up looking and feeling just too greasy. For this, I don't really use it much. The smell is nice, so if my hair is short and I'm going out at night, I might use it for brief effect and then subsequent smell, but for longer hold I'd probably try something else.
Price wise, you can probably get this for quite a decent price from Boots or Superdrug, and you can often get them on offer, but generally it'll cost you just under the £3 mark, depending on where you shop. However, I wouldn't necessarily recommend this product if it's long lasting hold without a greasy look that you're after.
I bought this product on the premise of firm hold as I found many products were fine to use in the morning but over the course of the day your hair style loses its firmness and begins to sag or become completely flat altogether.
I have reasonably short hair, keep that in mind, as I'm sure it would have different effects on hair of different lengths.
In your hand it feels like most other gels, coming out in jelly like globules and becoming a sort of slime on your hand when rubbed. Not particuarly nice to handle and requires soap and hot water to wash off, it certainly has a firm hold on the hands.
On application onto hair it feels reasonably thick. Hair is stuck together in thick clumps giving a sort of wet look to the hair, making it considerably darker in places. Actually I've had comments my hair has a sort of grey sheen (premature or what?). But at first I think I used too much product and my hair became undesirably thick and clumped making it less easy to style, perhaps easier to slick back.
On using less product and using it evenly across the hair the effect is much more desirable, the hair becomes much more mouldable and firm allowing a variety of styles. I often put the gel on and use a towel to remove excess as I think this product is sometimes too strong!
It certaily does its job and produces a firm hold. Perhaps too firm for my liking though! I'll keep looking for a perfect hair product.
When I ran out of my usual foam hair styling mousse, I decided to browse the chemist shelves to see what else was available for maintaining my hairstyle after drying it with a hair dryer.
Since I choose to keep my hair relatively long, past shoulder length, it only takes the slightest breath of wind outside and I can say bye bye to any hairstyle I might have sported prior to leaving my front door.
I've tried many a formula to help maintain my hairstyles, and usually the only method that seems to have much effect, is to use an industrial strength hair spray. I've had some success with mousses, in that they'll hold my hair style in place when I'm inside. But once I'm out braving the elements, I can forget it.
Not being one to take much notice of adverts on TV, I have however, found the adverts for V05 hair gel quite memorable. While I may not wish to style my barnet with the wild and spiky looks featured in the ads, I would like my fringe, at least, to remain in place.
So, there I was in the chemist, ignoring the mousses and instead, sizing up the pros and cons of the various hair gels for sale. I chose V05 on the strength of its advertising. No doubt I could have chosen an own brand (in this case Boots) at a cheaper price, but there wasn't an enormous difference.
There are so many products in the V05 range and I've no idea what half of them are used for. There's moulding wax, styling wax, freeze spray and creative glue to name a few. Among the gels, is freeze gel, gel wet look, mega hold gel and firm hold gel.
I decided the mega hold gel was for probably more suited for short or spiky hair. And the wet look, no still not me. Freeze gel, no idea there. The firm hold gel seemed to be the most suited to my needs.
It comes in a large, clear, 200ml recyclable squeezy tube which you store standing on it's lid. You can see the gel inside which is blue with lots of bubbles. My 5 year old daughter is fascinated with this tube, telling me that the sea is inside. And yes, it does indeed look like the sea. It was only after using the gel for the first time that I discovered it's not really blue, that's only the colour of the tube.
~~~What it Does~~~
On the back of the tube it says 'for firm control and root lift:
* Long lasting firm hold;
* Hold longer even in damp/humid conditions;
* Ideal to sculpt, mould and shape;
* Adds fullness and definition to all styles;
* Easy to wash out.
The gel should be applied to damp or dry hair and worked through from roots to the ends. You can then either mould your hair into shape and leave to dry naturally, or blow dry into a style. You can also apply it to individual strands after your hair is dry, for extra definition.
Although it doesn't tell you how much to use of this stuff, past experience leads me to using only a very small amount on my hair, probably the size of a 5 pence piece. I usually only use it on my fringe as it's this part of my hair that frequently loses shape.
It has a nice, fresh clean smell, a bit like a deodorant. I rub the gel into my fingers and then into my hair and comb it through. As soon as I start blow drying my hair I can feel the brush struggling slightly to work its way through my hair where the gel is. And once it's dry, my hair has a lovely, bouncy look to it and stays perfectly in place.
The big test came when I ventured outside. In fact, I had forgotten all about the gel the first time after I used it. It was only when I was outside in a howling gale, that I suddenly realised my fringe was barely moving. This just never happens as it usually ends up plastered back against my head and I have to readjust it when I enter a store or wherever.
So, my verdict on the V05 Firm Hold styling gel is a great big thumbs up. It also lasts well until I next need to wash my hair. Even hair brushing doesn't ruin it. I'll keep on buying this gel, but I think it will be a long time before I need to do that. I've been using this for four months and the tube looks like I've barely touched it. I think it could last years!
It costs just over £3.00 at most supermarkets and chemists.
