When I was looking for a replacement styling product, it was apparent that the fashion is now primarily for harder waxes and clay, all aimed at the dry messed up type fashions of younger people. For someone like me who just needs some definition for my short hair style, but shall we say of slightly older years, there was nothing really calling out to me. I don’t want messed up or - as one brand was offering – “dishevelled”, I just want something to pick out strands of my hair, position them whilst adding a hint of shine. Plus, I prefer a softer material to work with, and have used waxes in the past with mixed experiences. Whilst there were a number of squeezy bottles on the shelf, this was the only gel material in a tub on offer. I prefer the tub approach, being able to dip my fingers in and pick out as much as I need or want to work with.
I took a sniff of the product in the shop and it wasn’t a smell that particularly attracted me, but it didn’t offend either, so I made the purchase, at £3 for the small 75ml tub.
This gel feels so pleasant to apply, it is easy to pick up on the fingers, it’s soft in the tub, and I rub it between my hands and then through my hair. Having just washed my hair, it feels absolutely silky soft when I am actually applying it. It does enable me to position my style and it will stay where it’s put at that time. Immediately afterwards, this gel gives my hair a gorgeous shine without being a wet look. My hair is also soft and in lovely condition. The only problem at this stage is that the smell of the gel has intensified and it is become a fairly strong smell.
So far, this is making it sound like the perfect product, but the problem is that the hold isn’t all that great. The shine wears off quite quickly as the day goes on and by the end of the working day my hair is actually becoming a bit flyaway again, which is disappointing. Also, my hair remains quite soft so this would not be suitable if you were looking for any sort of lift or standy-up styles.I like using this for an evening out but it’s not really suitable as a daily styling product for me because it’s just not a firm or long enough hold.
ATTENTION! This product does not hold like a gel - NOT EVEN REMOTELY. It is a complete like - the only thing it does it grease your hair - A LOT and make it fall down - MISLEADING ADVERTISING in every single way !!!! I was expecting a good hold like a gel - or at least one that will hold my hair - this does not do any of this, my hair falls down as if it was not tocuhed. I have tried both with dry hair and damp hair, little product and more product - IT DOES NOT WORK - please do not buy it is a complete lie.
My finishing touch.
Shapes like a wax, holds like a gel.
I don't really like to use too much product on my hair once I have straightened. BAck in the 80's I used a lot of hairspray to keep my hair in place, I never liked to have one strand out of place and would literally use about a bottle a week but now I am older and much more relaxed about my hair I don't really like it to look set, just nice and natural looking. Saying that though, "natural" takes a lot of work, it's that just stepped out of the salon look we are all trying to achieve and this takes time and effort.
One of the products though that helps me to achieve the finished look is this excellent gel wax from V05. It is described on the tub as such. "V05 gel wax combines the hold of a gel without the crustiness, and the shaping of a wax without the greasiness, to create the most extreme lasting styles."
I know what they mean by crustiness. I have used gel in the past that after wearing it for a couple of hours makes your hair look like it has dandruff in it, little white flakes of dried gel which does not look nice. At the end of the day you get none of this in your hair after using this gel/wax/
What's great is that I can use this gel wax in a number of ways. If I have straight hair and am just wearing it down this product really works to just smooth out my tresses and keep the flyaway bits in tact and to put down some of the flyaway bits without making it look greasy and heavy. If I am wearing my hair in a style such as a ponytail or an undo this product works to really finish it off nicely and tidy up and loose stray ends that are poking out the sides of my hair. Although I'm a girl I would say that this would be an excellent product for men with short hair too to really hold their style in place.
It definitely has a waxy consistency to it because when I rub it between my fingers to soften it up you can feel the wax, however, it is quite a thin feeling wax and when I apply it to my hair it is really light and not at all greasy or heavy. It does not really hold like I would expect a wax too, all rigid and non moving. This gel/wax still allows my hair to move and be flexible. It doesn't really have a smell which is fine by me and all in all this is a good hair product that works.
A 75ml tub costs £3.89 in Boots which in my opinion is a very reasonable price for a brand name, good quality product.
I am plagued ... it's true. I've grown up with women adoring my hair. Cries of 'Oh, I wish I had your hair, it's lovely,' and 'You've got such lovely curls' have been peppered in with comments from mates such as 'Mornin', bog brush' and 'A real man wouldn't perm his hair'...
Ladies, you can have my ruddy hair, and 'mates' ... do one!
Yes, my hair is untameable, and I don't mean in that wild, unruly and styled look, I mean like the Flanders kids from The Simpsons. I go from a cropped and tidy look to fearing washing the slightly longer hair in case someone tells me 'Don't blame it on the sunshine...'
Cue my attempted saviours: hair gel and hair wax. Two brothers separated in their styles and how they combat the various woes that plague curly haired gents who want nothing more than to be able to have the care window open on a sunny day without fearing a back comb effect after 100 metres at 30mph. I have long used the easily dispensable tubes with the liquid gel in that do go some way to taming my wild locks, and this does at least enable me to be able to keep it in check and acts as a sort of minimiser; but nothing has so far managed to create a flatter and more controlled effect.
Until this stuff came along. Unsure of itself in terms of what it actually is, it has the consistency of a gel but works more like a wax. This means it has tighter control over your hair without just gripping it all together. Whereas I'd usually get a gel just fielding the various directions my hair wants to go in, wax will actually have a bit mroe manipulative control.
So, feels like a gel - and actually works like an extreme wax, so aptly named as well. The instant I apply it to my hair it seems to settle it as if it's a parent calming their kid down after a tantrum. It's quite shocking actually to see my hair looking somewhat straight in a situation that is not dripping wet, which is the only other time I've been able to achieve this unless I use some of the horrible sticky yucky wax I really don't like and leaves clumps of wax still sitting in my hair.
It's very effective, and rinses easily off my hands and, interestingly, from my hair as well. I'm well aware that using this sort of product can have long lasting consequences for hair, and that applying more and more day after day application on top of application is not particularly good, but when I rinse my hair a lot of this stuff comes out without too much excessive effort. I find this a bonus as it leaves my hair feeling somewhat cleaner than other greasy gels do.
I can't really say whether this is a wax or a gel, to be honest, and I rteally don't care either way. Whatever they've done, it seems to work, and although I don't need to use this every day, or even when my hair is relatively short, I can feel reassured that if my hair does get long, I can wash it properly and I have a product I can apply that will keep it relatively tamed and in check. It's reassuring, and although it's not the cheapest product it'll only sting you around the £4 mark for a 75g tub. I may use more than the average wax/gel user (see, I still can't work out which it is!) but even so it helps me out in the mornings when I'm in a rush. Recommended.
I go through a ton of hair wax. My hair is short but it is spikey so I need something that is going to be strong enough to hold my hair in its style for the whole day (and sometimes the night too) long. There are so many different brands of hair wax to choose from and sometimes it is hard to know which one to go for. I do have favourites but a lot of the times when I go into a shop to buy some they aren't available so it is pot luck and hope that I pick something that is going to be good.
I can minimise the risk of it not being suitable by always going for a strong wax as my hair is really thick and wavy naturally I need the strong ones to help control it. I actually ended up trying this because I had asked a friend to pick me some wax up in town as I was going out that night and didn't have time to go get some and I had none left. Just from looking at it I knew it wouldn't have been something that I normally would have picked for myself but as it was the only one available it had to do.
The wax was by Vo5 and was a gel wax. As soon as I read it I knew it wasn't going to be strong enough for my hair as I have tried gel waxes before and they never give the hold or the pliability that waxes give. Again though as it was all there was I knew it would at least make my hair look better than its natural frizzy dry mess that it was.
The gel wax cost me something like £4 so it wasn't even as though it was cheap. Luckily it wasn't as bad as I had thought it was going to be but it still isn't something that I would ever get myself again. I really didn't like the texture of this. It wasn't runny like a gel but it wasn't hard like a wax either and was more like a semi set crème. It felt a little sticky and watery in my hands when I rubbed the wax between them but at least the cream didn't turn to liquid when I did this.
A little bit of this wax helped shape my hair and give it some better definition but I did find that it was more difficult to actually get the style that I wanted with it. With wax it is makes hair much more pliable but this just sort of made it wet feeling which made it really difficult to get the messy yet structured look that I was aiming for. I think it would work much better on shorter spikey styles where you don't have to do much to shape your hair as it is cut to go precisely into that style.
It didn't give me the level of hold that I normally get with other waxes either as my hair did start to flop a little and wasn't nearly as shaped and defined as it had been earlier when I left the house. The one good thing about it was that it did take away the fluffiness from my hair and smoothed it out a little so that it didn't look so bird nesty.
In the end it did make my hair look better than it would have normally but it just wasn't for me. It didn't give me as much hold or shape as I would have liked and it just wasn't strong enough. I also just didn't like the way it felt when I was using it but again this might have something to do with me not really liking using these types of products. I would use it again but only if there was nothing else available and if I really needed something to control my hair on a night out.
As the name suggests this product is a hybrid between gel and wax. It claims to 'shape like a wax and hold like a gel'. To be honest this product kinda sucks. Its hold is quite weak, definitely not comparable with that of a gel. It is good at shaping and moulding your hair but it does not last particularly long on its own, so you definitely need some sort of hair spray. The only element of this product which is similar to gel is the fact that it washes off your hands really easily, unlike VO5 Styling Wax. It has a nice smell, but I have noticed that it quickly gets a musty smell when you put it in your hair, probably because of oil.
Gel wax is not oil based so it washes off your hair easily, which canbe a problem if it is raining outside.
However the general mild hold means that it is a very pliable product and is excellent for shorter styles where there is not much hair to keep stationary.
Having short hair and being quite thick I need to use some kind of styling gel o my hair to keep it neat and tidy looking. If I don't use a product of this kind I cannot control my hair as easily. I have used this range a few times and quite like the range.
This gel wax comes housed in a plastic tub kind of container with a lid which is removable. This is a gel wax and is a little softer than a wax product and a little firmer than the gel kind, a kind of combination of the 2 is best I can describe it.
Not much is needed on the fingers to work it into the hair, I just dip my fingers into the tub and then just brush them through my hair and style it and because it works really well you don't need to overly load the fingers with the gel because too much makes it then far too much on the hair and make it too heavy. It doesn't feel sticky and it just moulds the hair into the style and shape you are wanting and it holds firm for most of the day. Works really well for short hair like my hair.
It gives the hair a good shine to it and it is easy to wash out at the end of the day and the hair isn't damaged. It doesn't dry hard but gives the hair a good hold to last most of the day. If I am going out later in the day, I just add a little bit more and do the same as the first time I used it. It tames the frizz on the hair and if have any awkward parts of the hair which won't stay in place when it has grown a little since your hair cut, this gel helps control where you need the hair to go. Has a good hold on the hair.
It has a fruity kind of smell and one I do like, the smell is noticeable when it is first applied on the hair but not so much a hour or so later. But so long as the gel works to hold my hair, I am not too bothered about a lasting smell on it.
It is good quality and it cost £3.89 for a 75ml tub, the tub does last a good month to 6 weeks or so from the tub and used most days and so for the price of it I do think it is a good value product for the price.
I have used it for styling some of grandson's hair and it has styled their hair in the way they like it styled and held well. Hasn't damaged their hair after washing it and just in a good condition again.
I will purchase it again because I like this one and it suits my hair and helps styling it easier with a good hold.
I rate it 5 stars.

-Methoxy PEG/PPG-7/3 Aminopropyl Dimethicone
-VP/Methacrylamide/Vinyl Imidazole Copolymer
-Alpha Isomethyl Ionone
-Butylphenyl Methyl Propional
-Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde
The price of VO5 Gelwax ranges from £3.89 - £5.50 depending on where you purchase it from.
The Texture of VO5 Gelwax is very similar to Gel, although it's much thicker and less sticky!
Does it do what it's supposed to?
Well the slogan of VO5 Gelwax is as follows "Shapes like a Wax, holds like a Gel" on this basis I would say definately, it has a strong hold on your hair without the need for masses of the product and isn't uncomfortable like how Wax sometimes forces your hair to feel.
Styles you can try with it:
-The most basic thing to do with this product this to put about 2cm on your hands and then rub together, next just push up your layers to give them a more enhanced surf-style look.
-Another style I use a lot is to push all your hair forward and stand with your head pointing down, next brush all of your hair forward and slowly move you help upright, next position your fringe properly in place and backcomb the back of your hair lightly and push forward the sides more, next place some of the gel in between two of your fingers and go over the layers that you would like to stand up/stick out, once you are happy with this simply mess up the back of your hair slightly and you're done!
-Again place 2cm on your hands and rub it in, then simple run your finger through your hair to enhance it and give you the classic surfer look.
-Another Style you could try to brush all of the hair forward apart from the fringe and the rub a tiny amount of the product into your hands to slightly enhance the fringe and then rub some into two fingers of both hands and go over each bit of the hair to provide yourself with a spiked up style.
This was the first tub of wax I had ever bought in my life, and chose it because of the hold it offered and also the reputable brand name.
The good thing about this product is that whilst being white in the tub it dries clear and gives the wet look which I like in my hair. This unlike some other brands is not sticky and does not feel horrible to put in your hair.
As it promises it holds firm all day keeping your appearance maintained. But like with any other hair product it needs washing out of your hair at the end of the day or else your hair will quickly become greasy, I can see this being a problem for some people who are short of time but having 2 showers a day is something I do everyday and no longer phases me.
I would give this product a 5/5 rating because it does the job well and is a lot cheaper than its competitors.
This has got to be the best gel ever since ermm EVER!!,Its so easy to use and after a few short mintures of putting this on your hair will be the style and shape you want and need
I first came across V05 Wax after seeing it at asda on the self the gel i used before was called Shock waves Control this is what i have used for years now until i found this magic gel called VO5 wax,It comes in a blue/sliver case and even that made me wont to buy it,You can normally pick it up from your local supermarket so far i have only seen asda and tesco sell it,Its 3.00 to buy
The one problem i had with gels and waxs in the past is most of them made my hair wet or greasy some of them even dyed up after like 1 hour of using them and this really was annoying me but VO5 put a stop to all this,The first day i used this i could see the change my hair was shining the style was perfect and even after 3 hours of use my hair was still the same,Even when it came to the end of the day V05 is so easy to wash out of your hair its almost like you was not wearing it in the first place PURE MAGIC
You can apply this gel in many ways but i always find it best to apply about 5 mins just after you have washed your hair or come out of the shower etc
This product is a must buy your hair will be great for hours and will not move it will smell good and people will be saying how come your hair is so good you tell them its VO5 wax
I rate this item 10 out of 10
Very rarely do I use a wax type of product on my hair. To be honest with you with jaw-length hair I haven't really felt the need and never in the past really got on with it anyway. However having jaw-length hair can be a bit of a problem when it comes to going to the gym and jogging and stuff like that (which I do daily). It's a bit too long to allow it to flop all my sweaty face but hard work to put it in a band (as in a ponytail) due to my hair being so fine and not quite long enough so I end up looking a right old scruff bag!
However I have found to get my hair to do anything (on gym days) that I do need to wash and straighten my hair the night before in which case then I can get my hair to behave itself reasonably well with ten ton of hairspray!
However I have been mooching through some of my Mums stuff lately and been trying it all out lol. This was one product I though was worth a go! I have really bad wispy, short bits of hair around my ears that curl up and are too sort to straighten and I really wanted to see if it could tame that down at all whilst giving my hair some 'grip'!
First off I must point out that this product is from this range of products but it's called 'Soft Moulding Wax'. I'm not sure whether this product has actually over taken from this 'Extreme Style Gel Wax' or what but Dooyoo have said to write my review here, so here I am!
The pot is as pictured at the top of this review in the main. Royal blue plastic 75ml round tub with matching screw on/off lid to the top of it. On the main of the pot I'm told it is VO5 'New Improved Look' Soft Moulding Wax which is 'For definition, shine and frizz control'. Other information on the pot tells me a bit about the product and gives me directions for use (including tips), ingredients are listed along with contact details for Alberto-Culver (the manufacturer of VO5 products), the size is stated and finally there is bar-code on there. Nice, neat little pot this and easy to use and functional too.
A Bit About The Product According To The Back Of The Pot....
Long lasting definition
Adds shine & tames frizz
Ideal to re-style, through the day
Non-sticky natural feeling hair
Washes out easily
Directions For Use....
Use on/damp dried hair for a lasting natural look.
Use on dry hair for the finishing touch to your style.
Use sparingly, a little goes a long way. You can always add more if needed. Warm by rubbing between the palms of your hands, before applying to the hair. VO5 Soft Moulding Wax can be used other after styling products.
Me Using It....
Well I use this on my finished style in the main and now on a daily basis. I do use other styling products as well and say I'm having my hair in a ponytail, my hair will be styled that way and I will direct some wax on my hair to 'set' it and define etc.
So as VO5 tell us a little of this product goes a long way and when I opened the tub for the first time I did expect to be greeted with what I consider to be a hard wax product. Well this isn't so! This is a light pink in colour, creamy but slightly set (until you dig into the pot) berry fruity smelling wax. It's odd in appearance lol.
However this stuff is fabulous and very easy to use indeed. As I say I get a small amount into my hands, rub it slightly to warm it through and therefore make it easier to use (though it's easy anyway to be honest) and then gently run it through my hair. So impressed am I with this, that I've nicked me Mums pot permanently and don't just use it for the gym but lets talk about that first shall we!?!
With it being a wax I did expect it to not be so good in humidity. But it holds amazingly well. Like I say I just use it really in place of my usual hairspray and gently run some through my finished style but if you have really naughty hair run this through first and then style etc if desired. Not only once it's on the hair can you not feel it this is strong holding in a really natural way that gives a lovely clean sheen to the hair that makes the hair radiate with health! It feels great and even with my sweat and body heat my style looks amazing even if I don't! The warmer I get the cleaner my hair smells to as the smell of this becomes slightly more apparent and yes you can re-style with this in and it washes out with ease too!
Now the reason I pinched this permanently is because not only do I find it great and functional for my hard to style for the gym problem this is fabulous on longer hair too for big nights out etc! As I said previously my hair is jaw-length and has layers in it and a fringe. A little of this gently rubbed through my layers not only defines them and holds their style and gives it a nice sheen but really it refreshes otherwise tired looking hair and styles and gives the hair an edgy look! It diminishes frizz with ease and is controlling in a way you can't feel! I think this is amazing, I lurve it!
My Mums pot cost her £2.89 in Boots (Don't worry folks I am replacing her pot for her too lol).
How refreshing to know there is finally a small pot of magic that I can use now whenever I want ultimate style with my hair.
I first came across V05 Wax after seeing their other products on TV and hearing that this wax was good from other people at college.
In the last year or so I have tried to many different hair styling products such as Brylcreem and Shockwaves, and none of them seem to work on my hair!
When I began looking for the right styling wax I was looking for a product which wouldnt make my hair look or feel greasy and would still give me the ultimate style, and then I discovered this, what magic!
You apply the wax to towel dried hair after having a bath or shower and just style it as you would normally, you let it dry for about 10 minutes and go out feeling great.
Its easy to wash off, it smells lovely, it gives your hair a great hold, its easy to style with, friendly to hair and easy to wash off hands (something which is so annoying with hair gel).
I completely love this product, only been using it a few months and already cant use anything else!
Anyone who's ever had a slightly longer haircut with a bit of edge- whether it's spikey, choppy or layered, will know the utter frustration and futility with trying to find something to style it that won't make you all crunchy and oddly shiny, yet won't let your hair haphazardly blow around in a carefree fluffy kind of way, then settle into something distinctly upsettingly flat. This conundrum gets worse the longer your hair is- especially seeing as it's fashionable to have poker-straight hair- it's hard to find some sort of miracle product that will help you out if you want big, choppy, voluminous punky cuts without making you look like Johnny Ramone when you get out into the flattening wind.
Enter V05 Gel-Wax, my miracle product! My hair's sort of shoulder length, with a lot of layers cut into it, and I like to be able to woomph it up a bit in the mornings so it looks casually tousled and effortlessly messy, and running a bit of this through the tips works perfectly. It also woomphs up my fringe in a quite cool way, and generally puts some natural-looking bounce in my hair, like if I'd slept on it in a really fantastic way. It claims to "shape like a wax, hold like a gel", and I think it does the job marvellously, creating flicky bits that withstand malicious weathering.
V05 Gel Wax is good for anything you might want to use wax for- adding definition to very short/or curly hair, adding volume to longer hair, flicking out tips, holding fringes, etc etc... but not so good if you are looking for an actual gel to spike your hair up- it's too thick a consistency to do that well.
You'd also find that you're using a ridiculous amount if you want to coat your entire hair- the wax comes in a frustratingly tiny 75ml pot which lasts me about a month, using it sparingly every day when styling- and at £3.50 a go that's reasonable-ish I suppose. Using it more than that, you'd be going through the pots at an alarming rate.
The gel-wax itself is very sticky, and of a much firmer consistency than you might expect, basically behaving exactly like a sort of transparent wax. The pot suggests you can use it on damp or dry hair, but I find that if you put it in wet, when your hair dries the wax isn't at all noticeable, creating a much softer and gentle efffect, so personally I dry my hair, haphazardly rub in a small amount through the tips, then turn my head upside down and blowdry it. Then add a tiny bit more for luck. This gives me a style that holds pretty nicely all day!
Unfortunately, because it doesn't act as a gel, if you do want to retouch your look during the day, you can't use that old tried-and-tested technique of splashing your hands with water and then running your fingers through your hair- that just flattens the style, rather than refreshing the gel. You'd be better off putting a bit more in- it doesn't go crusty or crunchy at all, so don't worry about layering it in if you fancy it. Washes out nicely at the end of the day, too, without any unpleasant stickiness running down your face.
In general, a top-notch product, the best I've found for long hair. Used in conjunction with a nice firm hairspray, it might just be unbeatable.
Shapes like a wax, holds like a gel / Gel Wax combines the best of both worlds, giving you extreme lasting styles minus crustiness and greasiness / With long-lasting firm hold to shape, mould and define, you'll have no excuse for a bad hair day now.
