Advantages: Locks colour in. Leaves hair shiny and sleek.

Disadvantages: None.

I dye my hair regularly and it is quite dry naturally due to my diet and lifestyle and somwhat damaged though over styling too. After using a permanant dark brown dye last year on a slightly lighter natural brown hue, I was dismayed to see the colour was not lasting and with every wash my hair seemed to turn a shade lighter. My hair was obviously very porous and in a bad condition and I desperately needed something to lock the colour into the hair shaft.

Alberto is a brand I used when I was a kid and I feel it is a brand name I can trust. Their VO5 range includes specific products for natural blondes and brunettes in addition to general products made for the natural condition, ie. dry or greasy. The 'Fade Defy' product is especially for all coloured treated hair and the product has a new, "best ever formula" which is designed to let you keep you colour for longer. The bottle does state, however, that the results will be more noticable on brown or red shades.

I have the 300ml bottle which is the average size. It comes in a bright red bottle. I would like to see the brand change this design to a transparent bottle as my local facilities do not accept coloured plastic for recycling purposes. The wording on the front of the bottle - the hookline, if you like - states that this product "reduce colour fade for the just coloured look".

On the back of the bottle there is a helpful explanation and actual diagram of what Alberto call 'Fade Defy Technology'. The picture shows how, after 15 washes and in comparison to rival brand shampoo, particles of colour are locked into the hair when the shampoo forms a barrier around the shaft. The shampoo is described as "protein enriched" and this quasi-scientific explanation is somewhat believable and is an exciting prospect.

The bottle has a handy flip top opening so no fiddley time consuming screw off tops or pump action. Just turn upside down and squeeze. A generous amount comes out. The liquid is transparent white with a pearly sheen to it. I find it quite thick and gelatinous. The aroma is mild, fresh and feels clean. It is not particularly flowery or artificially perfumed which is refreshing.

I do not need to use much to wash my long hair - maybe two 50p sized dollops. It is easy to work up to a lather and the foam seems quite concentrated. It feels smooth in the hair and gentle on the scalp.

I also use the 'Fade Defy' conditioner in the range and this helps compliment and enhance the effects of the shampoo. After washing my wet hair feels very easy to manage. My hair shafts feel sleek and straight. When dry my hair has a high shine and a softness but is also very manageable. Most importantly, this shampoo does what it says and helps keep the artifical colour in the hair shaft! It really does a great job.

This is my favourite shampoo on the market and it does wonders for my naturally frizzy, dry damaged dyed hair! It's approximately £1.99 a bottle but I can often get it for £1 at Asda. I would recommend trying this!

Summary: A great shampoo that helps retain hair colour for longer.
