Advantages: works a treat, cheap cheap cheap
Disadvantages: packaging
I have already written a review on "Alberto VO5 Silky Smooth Elixir Shampoo" which is another product in this range and if you've already read that one, you'll know I'm a fan.
VO5 perhaps isn't the most popular brand and isn't the best that money can buy but mention it to almost anyone and you'll bet they'll have heard of it.
For the past few months now I've been buying the pink version (as mentioned above) as it's always on offer, a snip at just a pound! It's purse friendly and a shampoo I know does wonders for my hair. Why the change then?
In the past week or so I finally dyed my hair from its dull faded once-upon-a-time red colour to a very dark brown (almost black in fact). When I saw the finished result I thought "Oh boy, that sure as hell is going to fade fast".
But being the ditzy person I usually am, did I think about buying a shampoo to prevent fade? No, I carried on with my norm, until it ran out and the boyfriend went shopping. Now fairplay, it's not something you'd usually expect from a man but he came home with "Fade Defy". "Where's my pink one?!?!" I panicked... his response? " Well this is the same brand, also on offer but for coloured hair"."Aha" I thought, "Genius!", though of course I didn't tell him that haha.
Now I'm not going to bore you with scientific phrases and all the writing on the bottle, I'll leave you to read it yourself if you're bored in the bath, or maybe even as toilet reading material. Haha. But the basic gist is the shampoo locks in colour for longer than most other shampoos and prevents your hair from fading.
So the trial:
Well as per usual shampoo guidelines you massage a blob into wet hair. The first thing I noticed was the scent difference, in fact I preferred this one. Well done boyfriend!
I washed out as usual but unfortunately he didn't buy the conditioner (so he doesn't quite get 10/10 for effort) so I continued to dry and straighten (and further damage) my already heat/dye ravaged hair.
The results:
My first thought was my hair looked really shiny, not greasy needs-a-wash shiny but actually glossy. Wow, and with only one wash?
I put it to the test though, me and the boyfriend were meeting up with work friends that night so I wondered if anyone would notice.
"Have you dyed your hair? It look's really nice!!" came the reaction from my might I mention MALE colleague.
"Ooh your hair looks really shiny, good shiny though" my female colleague cooed. "What shampoo are you using?"
At this point the boyfriend looked very smug.
"He picked it!" I replied.
Price and availability:
As said before it's almost always on offer for a mere quid, but usually retails at around £2.30. You can buy it at almost any supermarket or shampoo stockist.
Packaging:
Again, a similar complaint to my previous VO5 shampoo. The bottles opaque so you don't know how much you have left and it has a wonky lid so when you are running low it's difficult to rest on it's head to allow the remnants to gather so you don't waste any.
My overall opinion:
Well as you can tell, I liked this shampoo. It made my dyed hair look rich and glossy, got me compliments and smelling gorgeous for the bargain price of £1. But does it do what it claims? Well another week on and after a few washes my hair is still very dark and very glossy. Can't complain yet!
Summary: a great buy for the beauty bargainista!
