Advantages: Smooth Healthy Hair
Disadvantages: Terrible Fragrance
Intro
Finding a shampoo to tame exceptionally thick and hair prone to frizz is no mean feat and as a result I am always on the lookout for new products. I have tended to stick to the same brand over the years which have been proven to be effective and perfect for my particular hair type. I do however on occasion pick up the odd bargain product from time to time mainly due to the fact that I feel that nothing ventured nothing gained and due to the special offer prices it doesn't really matter if the item works on my hair or not. However I am eternally hopeful of finding a cheaper product which will tame my unruly locks. A recent product that I tried out was Vo5 Elixir bought for the bargain price of a £2 for both the shampoo and conditioner.
The Packaging
This was as stated a promotional product purchased from my local Asda store. The product was one of several elixir products available from the Alberto Vo5 range on offer. This particular item was the moisture soak version with extracts of white pearl and infused with 5 vital oils. It was presented in a rather pretty powder blue plastic bottle with a flip-top lid. I decided to give this one a try as it stated on the front of the bottle that it was intense hydration shampoo for dry or damaged hair. There was 300ml of product inside the container.
The Product/Fragrance/How to use
Well the manufacturer states that this shampoo will restore your hairs natural beauty with the indulgent trademark VO5 moisture soak elixir. It apparently contains a blend of 5 non greasy naturally replenishing vital oils which are essential for healthy looking brilliantly glossy hair everyday. The white pearl component apparently in addition will lock in moisture which will help to restore the hairs natural balance leaving the hair supple and easier to style. These I have to say are the maker's words and not mine. I still haven't discovered what white pearl is either so unfortunately I cannot comment on this aspect!!!! Some of the product ingredients are as follows. Nutrient rich Avocado and Jojoba oils, Strengthening Apricot and Almond oils. Well with these components you would think that the product would smell gorgeous, Right. Actually wrong. In all my days of using shampoo I have never witnessed a scent like this one. It actually reminded me of chlorine and how we tend to smell after being in a public swimming pool. I have to say at this point I wasn't overly sure as to whether or not I would bother to try out the product after all. However in the name of research I decided to persevere. The product itself was a sort of cloudy white colour which had a relatively thick consistency. The fragrance became more prominent as it was squeezed out of the bottle. A very chemical smell and quite unpleasant although clean like you have just scrubbed your bathroom with cleaning products. I poured a small amount into my hand and was glad I did as I felt that the product lathered up nicely and less was definitely more. I washed my hair twice and followed with the matching conditioner.
Results
I have to confess that despite the fragrance this product definitely made my hair feel silky smooth even when wet. I didn't even have to apply serum before using my brush as it glided smoothly through my hair and I notice that it was much less tangled than usual. After drying my hair in the usual way I did notice that it was visibly shinier than usual. My hair also felt softer and was quite bouncy. I certainly would be tempted to use this again as it really did what it said it would do on the packaging. Unfortunately I prefer my hair to smell nice and this would be the one thing that would stop me from using this everyday. Overall three stars worth a try.
Summary: Worth A Try

- 21/06/09 Elixir makes it sound like alchemy or sorcery. I had images of fairly godmothers and Alice in Wonderland. Sadly, not to be, but a great review nonetheless. 86) |
