Advantages: Hard wearing gel, cheap, smells nice
Disadvantages: Gel can build up in the lid and has to be wiped occasionally
I have been using Alberto VO5 Mega Hold Styling Gel for about 12 months now. I first bought it because it was on a buy one get one free offer at Tescos and after using it I discovered that it's the best one I have tried so far.
This review will be based on a 200ml (which is the 'New Larger Size apparently).
Packaging
As I already mentioned above this bottle is 200ml. The tube looks like a rather large tube of toothpaste and it made from soft plastic. The majority of the bottle is a see through blue colour which I find useful as you are always able to see how much gel is left. There is a small red strip on the top of the bottle claiming 'New larger size'. The lid is a darker shade of blue and has a flip lid with a thumb recess to pop it open. The lid is hinged and very easy to open and close. On the back of the tube are instructions and useful tips on how to use the product. There is also a list of the ingredients used to make the gel.
Price
I bought this tube from Tescos and it cost me £2.48. Another great thing about this product is that it is literally always on the buy one, get one free offer so is fairly reasonably priced for a hair gel.
Look
Once the gel is out the tube, it is clear in texture. Some hair gels I have used before feel sticky when you get the gel out the packet; this product does not feel very sticky which is an added bonus. If you leave too much gel on your fingers and let it dry, then it can become a little sticky.
Smell
Another thing I like about this gel is that it is slightly scented. I think it smells quite similar to my Lynx Africa deodorant and leaves my hair smelling nice once I have applied it.
Applying It
This gel can be applied to dry or damp hair which again is useful if you have just got out the shower and are running late (as I often am!!). I always tend to use this on wet hair, I apply a 50p size dollop on my hand and scrunch it through my hair, trying to spread it evenly. From here, I just let my hair dry naturally (I'm a bloke, I don't do hairdryers!). The result is, my hair stays how I styled it for the remainder of the day and it gives me the 'wet look' which I prefer. By this, I mean that my hair still looks wet, even when it has dried underneath the gel.
Does the product work?
Out of all the gels I have used over the years, this is my favourite one yet. It holds my hair in place all day, doesn't leave my hair feeling sticky and smells nice. My hair lays flat on my head all day so I am unable to comment on whether this product would work if you want parts of your hair spiky etc.
Range
Alberto VO5 are one of the leading companies that manufacture hair products. Also included in heir range are items such as shampoo, conditioners and a whole range of styling gels and waxes.
Summary
I would recommend this product for both males and females to use. It's in a handy size container and is useful to take on holiday as it fits nicely in a toiletry bag unlike some of the hair gel tubs that are on the market. As already stated it is one of Tescos permanent 'buy one get one free' offers so is also good value for money as you get 400ml for £2.48. This gel is easy to wash or brush out at the end of the day and doesn't leave any sort of powdery residue in my hair. My only gripe is that the gel can build up a little on the inside of the lid so you have to regularly wipe it round with a tissue.
Summary: A good hair gel
