“ Brand: VO5 / Type: Hair Mousse „
Whilst straight hair is always popular, there is definitely a feeling of femininity and style with volumised, thick and curly hair. Having hair that is medium in density, that is not too fine but not thick either and that is naturally curly, I tend to look for products that will boost all the hair that I have whilst holding the shape of my medium length hair all day. It was upon browsing my local Superdrug that I came across this product from VO5. I have to be honest, VO5 are generally a brand that my hubbie uses for his hair wax and gel however I decided to give it a go and it has been a staple of mine ever since.
The Product ~
The Alberto VO5 Styling Mousse Curls and Waves is packaged in a bright blue upright cylinder container which is made of a fine metal and feels in many ways like a deodorant or aerosol canister being very lightweight. The can contains 200ml of product and is illustrated in a rather modern way with the VO5 logo and a vertical line of text to indicate the product description. The bottle is topped with a bright blue transparent lid which houses the important spray applicator.
Upon clipping off the lid the product can be extracted by simply pressing down the plastic nozzle to omit the desired quantity of mousse. The mousse sprays very easily out of the bottle and comes out as a white liquid which quickly solidifies into a thick mousse upon contact with air. The mousse is a lovely consistency, feeling thick enough to tame even the finest of hair and smells gorgeous. Not too chemically but rather slightly perfumed, a smell which lingers in the hair all day long. VO5 claim on the bottle that this product is weather resistant with 'climate control technology' and that it protects hair from humidity for up to 24 hours.
The Price ~
A bottle of this hair mousse will usually set you back in the region of £3 - £4 from any local convenience store, however the results that this product produces more than justifies this reasonable expense.
The Application ~
I believe from use that this product is for hair that is naturally wavy or curly as it will simply exaggerate the curliness of the existing hair, however it can also be used to hold a curl in the hair after using a hot tool such as curling irons or GHD straighteners.
This product is very easy to apply, simply shake the can well and then squeeze the desired quantity out of the bottle. Apply the mouse liberally through towel dried hair before blow drying and styling as normal. I usually find that on my shoulder length hair a large squirt is more than enough and I then simply run this through my hair with my fingers, washing my hands afterwards as it can leave a slightly sticky feel on the skin.
The Results ~
The results speak for themselves, not only is the hair left smelling divine but this mousse actually holds the hair in shape for a good day. Unlike many other hair sprays and mousses, this mousse does not leave a sticky residue in the hair and does not leave the hair looking greasy or heavy with product. Instead the hair feels clean especially when used at the root and healthy looking. Whilst this product does indeed stay in the hair for a good 24 hours it does not completely protect the hair from humidity, as if you use on a misty morning and go outside the shape will hold for a good hours or so before becoming slightly frizzy however no-one can work miracles.
This mousse is perfect for wavy or curly hair and does indeed simply improve what you already have. My tip; when I have a night out and don't have a lot of time to straighten my hair, I simply run a handful of this through dry hair and scrunch to make the hair look natural and bouncy it can then be brushed as usual without leaving hair sticky.
All in all a great product that does exactly what it says on the tin, hence I am scoring it 5 stars out of 5 for reliability, price and most importantly smell.
Thanks for taking the time to read my review.

What is the best recommendation you can get from a money saving boffin like me? Read on and you will find out.
I was invited to Bristol to a wedding, I don't know Bristol well so I was to wary to plan a morning visit to an unknown destination and an unknown hairdresser. So I visited a local hairdresser for a cut a few days before and decided to do my own hair on the morning of the event.
In my haste to pack everything I needed, I forgot about styling products - so had to make a quick trip to Boots and opted to buy, for £2.79 VO5 curl and waves frizz control - long lasting firm hold.
It is very easy to use- a mousse that I fingered thru my towel dry hair, having put a portion into the palm of my hand, the I did the blow drying bit and voila! Great style all day- I applied it about 11am and when I got back to the hotel 13 hours later, I was still looking good!! It wasn't sticky and it did not make my hair reek of product.
It contains 24hr humidity protection, UV filters to stop environmental damage and it also claims to re-energise waves and curls- and with that I would not argue.
There are another two strengths available- flexible and extra - this one falling midway between the two.
Now here comes the money saver statement-I would be very happy to pay a great deal more. I could have paid a great deal of money had I gone to the hairdressers that morning and my hair I am sure, would not have looked and stayed looking any better.
I've tried a few mousses in the past few months. And this one is the best by far. It doesn't make your hair sticky or hang in clumps. But it does hold my hair in nice waves throughout the day. Given, its not perfect. But I've yet to find a more effective mousse.
Each night, I wash my hair and (when its still wet) plait it. I find its the quickest way to make my hair change (natural it's almost straight but not quite- it has is a kind-of big wave of itself if I make sense). Because I cannot be bothered with having to get up pointlessly early to muck about with my hair. However, before I started using mousse, my waves fell flat during the course of the day, returning to their natural inwards kink.
So using mousse is like a godsend. It takes 30 seconds to rub the mousse throughout my hair, and a further 60 seconds to plait my hair. Then in the morning, I just undo my plaits and spray a bit of hairspray (see my review on garnier fructus hairspray) on it and there I am.
The mousse costs about £2.70, which is fair price. The bottle last about a month, so at 30p a day its not bad.
A negative is that my hair did frizz a bit using it.
