--- Introduction: Why I brought this product ---
I have very long and very thick hair and when I go out I like to curl it. However, because my hair is so thick and heavy, I often find that without hairspray (and even with some hairsprays) the curls fall out really quickly, leaving my hair in a frizzy mess before I've even gotten out. I decided to try this hairspray as it was recommended by a friend and it promises to have an extra strong hold and be weather resistant. I was very excited to try this product and see whether it would be able to hold my hair in curls all night.
--- The Product ---
This hairspray by VO5 is described on the bottle as giving 'Strong Hold, 5 vital benefits and being weather resistant'. The 5 Benefits that it claims to give you are listed on the back and are as follows:
1) All day hold that brushes out easily, leaving hair soft to the touch
2) Weather protection- provides a shield against humidity for 24 hours, preventing frizz
3) Ultra fast drying with no sticky residue
4) Healthy shine to finish your style
5) UV filter to help protect against environmental damage.
That is quite a lot for one product to try to do!
The hairspray comes in a can with a spray top as most hairsprays do. The spray is quite wide which I find good as it means that it is quicker to spritz it all over your hair and there isn't too much product on one bit of hair, making it really stiff and sticky. The can is a hot pink colour with the V05 label on the front and text describing the product. I have seen that the newer cans of this product have a slightly different design (basically a different font for the writing) but the basic design is still the same as my can.
The can has a plastic hot pink lid which is fairly sturdy and fits very securely onto the top of the can. The lid stayed on even when I dropped the product onto tiles, so it is very secure! The can is fairly wide compared to most hairsprays and is quite tall. However it is still easy to grip in one hand. I personally think the packaging of this product is quite attractive, I like the colour and the design. I do however have a few issues with the quality. I know that the important part of this product is the hairspray inside, but considering that this hairspray isn't particularly cheap (£3-£4 in most stores for 400ml) I would expect the can to be of a certain standard. I have found that the can dents very easily and whilst I am aware I am not the most careful person and I do drop it a fair bit, I haven't had denting with other products from a can, suggesting that the metal used for this isn't particularly strong. I have found my can starting to rust as well around the top which is curious as I have only had it for about 4 months and I keep it in a box with all my other hair products.
The price of this product as I have mentioned is around £3-£4 in most stores, which is quite a lot for a can of hairspray. You do get a fair amount of product (400ml) for the money and I have to say I don't use mine all that often but it has lasted well. I've had it for about 4 months and it still feels fairly full.
--- My Opinions ---
I have found this product to work really well at holding my hair and keeping the curls in place. I find that I only need to spray a little over my hair and it is held for most of the night. I think the claims that it holds your hair for 24 hours may be a little wide of the mark, I find it holds for around 4 hours but that is enough for me. If you have less hair or thinner hair than me this might hold your hair for longer. Nevertheless, this hairspray does hold my curls much better than any I have tried before and the fact that you don't need to use too much of it means that your hair does not get sticky and tacky as I have found with other hairsprays.
One major bonus with this hairspray is that it really does brush out easily. All I have to do is grab my brush and go through my hair like normal. There is a little resistance but it is easy and fairly pain free to brush through. This is miles better than any other product I have tried where I have had to rake through my hair, causing myself a lot of pain. I have also found that if you leave this hairspray in overnight it doesn't tangle hair together because it is not sticky and my hair is easy to brush out even after sleeping on the hairspray which I think is very impressive.
I haven't found this product to be particularly weather resistant, if my hair gets wet the curls still fall out easily and my hair gets frizzy in humid conditions. It does prevent these effects from happening as quickly as they would if I didn't wear any product but it seems to delay the effects rather than prevent them. This isn't too big an issue for me as I think that is a fairly impossible task for a hairspray but if you were buying this hairspray because it claims to be weather resistant I think you would be disappointed.
I also haven't found this product to give my hair much of a shine. My hair is quite dull anyway, so I wasn't expecting it to look like a conditioner advert or anything but I didn't notice any difference at all. I think this might have something to do with the fact that my hair is curled though as when I have tried the hairspray on straightened hair, my hair has looked a little shinier. Again, this isn't really an issue for me as I really just wanted the hairspray to hold my hair well, but it is something that the product claims to do.
--- Overall Opinions ---
I feel like this review has highlighted a lot of negatives about this product and whilst these are true, I do love this hairspray. For me, all I really want this hairspray to do is hold my hair well whilst I am out and brush out easily enough that I can attempt it when slightly inebriated or when I'm a little worse for wear the next day! I feel that this product does a really good job of these two things and is better than anything else I have tried. It also smells really good and doesn't have that chemical smell that some hairsprays do. To me it smells quite sweet and I actually really like the way it smells.
I only given this product four stars because it does claim to do a lot of other things and I am not convinced it does them. For me personally they were not why I brought the product and any effect they do have is an added bonus. However, if you want a product that is weather resistant and gives you shiny hair this is probably not the hairspray for you.
I don't have any brands that I prefer over others when it comes to hairsprays, whenever I need some more I tend to just pick up whatever takes my fancy. The most recent hairspray purchase was this one from VO5.
The VO5 ultimate hold hairspray is available to purchase from supermarkets and places like Boots and Superdrug. The 400ml can usually costs around the £3 mark.
I think the whole reason I chose to buy this hairspray on this occasion was the pretty pink packaging. It is mainly pink in colour with silver detailing. There is a pink transparent lid at the top of this can and it doesn't cause any troubles trying to get the lid back on like other hairsprays I have used! All the information you could possibly need is featured on the can, it provides instructions on how to use it, warnings and ingredients.
To use the hairspray, I simply shake the can and press the button to emit a nice fine mist of hairspray. After squirting the hairspray out you are met with quite a pleasant smell, it doesn't smell as chemical as others I have used and has an almost floral type scent to it, it definitely smells girly. The mist has a nice consistency and I find that it sticks nicely on my hair without leaving any residue nor leaving it hard. Once it's dried it leaves my hair with a nice shiny look to it, it doesn't look like I've used hairspray which is a plus.
As far as the amount of hold goes, I'm impressed. I have never come across the perfect hairspray which holds my hair in place the entire day or night out but this one comes pretty close. I don't usually do anything fancy with my hair but even just straightening it in the morning, it doesn't stay straight all day, using this hairspray leaves it nice and straight throughout the day without any troubles and without making it look like I've used hairspray and unnatural. Again, when I put my hair up, it keeps those pesky fly away hairs out of my face and in place where they should be. At the end of the day, the hairspray brushes out without any problems and doesn't leave any residue behind.
Overall, I'm really impressed with this hairspray. The pretty pink packaging lured me in and I'm glad it did as it performs really well and does a good job of keeping hair in place without an unnatural look to it and the hairspray brushes out with ease.
I am a bit of a girl when it comes to doing my hair, I like to do it before I go out and I often use hairspray to keep it in place, I often find that hair was will not hold hair in place for the whole day and this is where hairspray comes in. I purchased this when it was on offer at tesco and I got a good deal, I often use tesco own brand hairspray which is pretty poor, but does the job just. I wasn't sure whether to buy this hairspray as the bottle is very Girly, it definately wasn't deigned for use by guys! This however didn't put me off and I popped it into my trolley.
This usually retails at £3, I paid only £1.50 on a half price offer. I felt this was a good price and I got 400ml of hairspray for my money, it is quiete a lot of hair spray and the bottle has lasted me a very long time. The bottle itself promises to be quarter resistant and also have 5 vital benidfits for your hair. These are - all day hold, weather protection, fast drying spray, healthy shine and uv filter to product your scalp! All in all the bottle is pink and very girly. There are the words strong hold on the front and that is what attracted me to this product. I thought it was worth a go and I am glad I tried it as it is much better than own brand hair spray.
Best I have tried?:
This is easy to spray and you can spray it where you want easily. It does dry very quick which is good as it locks in my hair style after I have waxed. I basically use this to keep my hair up with the style I have at the moment. A small coverage over my head goes a long way. My hair doesn't look too shiny which is a positive and it is very easy to wash out. I brush it out before bed and it comes out nice and easy in the shower. It is no nonsense. It is however very sticky and I do occasionally get too much in my hair and it clumps! I like to use a very small amount, it is as strong as they say it is and I am happy to use this, it actually has a pleasant smell to it which I like. The smell also doesn't want to make me gag or be sick like some hair sprays can. I don't think it works in all weather because as soon as my hair becomes wet from the rain it does start to go flat, but this doesn't bother me too much because on normal weather days its brilliant.
My top tip with this product is that a little goes a long way, if I put too much in my hair I do regret it so I am very careful now with this. My girlfriend also uses this hairspray and she says its one of the best she has tried. I would definately consider buying this hairspray again if it was a little bit cheaper. If I ever see this on offer then I will be buying some more. If your a guy don't worry too much about the girly can, it still works well for us and I am very happy with my purchase. There are only a few negatives to this so it gets a 4 star from me. It's a really good product that needs to be used very sparingly! No one wants sticky hair! Thanks very much for reading my review, I hope it helped you out. Give this a go if you see it in the supermarket, I'm glad I did.
Thanks again, josh - jlaker1992
I tend to buy which ever hair spray is cheapest in whichever shop I'm in when I remember that I need more! This has lead to me having some rather bad quality sprays that make my hair stay in place but generally feel awful! I decided that maybe it was time to go in search of something decent and I ended up purchasing this VO5 Ultimate Hold Hairspray.
The pink and silver can is what attracted me to the product to begin with as it's girly, bright and eye catching.
A closer look at the can promised that this product would:
*Hold my style all day but still brush out easily
*Protect my hair from the weather and help to prevent frizz
*Dry quickly and not leave a sticky residue
*Protect my hair with a UV filter
*Give my hair a healthy shine
This all sounded fantastic so I picked up a can for £2 in Asda, although I'm not sure if this was on offer as a quick look just now showed the price as £3.05. This price is for a 400ml can of hair spray, which I think is reasonable.
When I first used this spray I noticed that it smells a little better than the cheaper sprays I have used, it still smells like hair spray but with a slightly perfumed smell mixed in too.
The spray did dry quickly as was promised on the can, which is great as I tend to back comb sections of my hair for nights out and have to spray each section and usually wait for it to dry before I move onto the next. This means that doing my hair was a few minutes quicker than normal.
When my hair was done it felt nice and soft still, not sticky or stiff which is great. I did also have a bit of a healthy shine, although my hair wasn't overly shiny (which I wouldn't have wanted anyway!)
I haven't been out in any wet weather as yet with this spray on my hair and I'm hoping I won't have to! I certainly haven't suffered any frizz though whilst I've had this in my hair.
I'd done my hair using this spray just last night and did my usual trick of falling asleep without having brushed my hair or taken off my make up. By this morning I found that although I had horrific panda eyes my hair was looking surprisingly good and was still holding the style from the previous evening, so it certainly does hold well!
When it comes to brushing out the product, it does brush out easily leaving no residue that I can see.
Overall, this is a great hair spray that performs wonderfully for a reasonable price so I would definitely recommend it to others
I'm not one for spending ages getting ready in the morning, or even before a going out in the evenings particularly, so when it comes to doing my hair I want something that works, lasts and is quick. It was actually from a friend's recommendation, and having seen some positive reviews, that I decided to try the V05 spray after not having had much luck with other sprays, and I'm glad I did because it's been decent enough and didn't cost a fortune either.
V05 are a big brand when it comes to hair care products and I have confidence that their products are good quality and backed by some expertise. I don't, however, tend to believe the claims of hair care products so I'm always quite dubious when I try things that say they're going to transform my hair in to something from a L'Oreal advert! Their Ultimate Hold Weather Resistant Hairspray is one version of the product in this range as I believe it also comes in formats like gel and mousse, and you can get it in 400ml or 100ml sizes. I opted for the latter as I wanted something to take in my handbag and also because I didn't want to end up with lots of product if I didn't think it was up to much (sceptical me). The travel version is just that; it's the perfect size to take away with you and that gets bonus points from me.
The packaging is quite eye-catching with the cans being pink with touches of silver and a pink plastic lid. It looks modern, feminine and fun yet sophisticated enough that I'd expect a good quality product from it. On the front we're told that this is 'long lasting ultrafine spray, easy brush out & leaves hair soft'. There's also a little logo telling us this has '5 Vital Benefits', making it sound like an all-in-one spray that does everything and protects your hair from the weather. The benefits include :
1. All-day hold that leaves hair soft and is easy to brush out
2. Weather protection that acts as a 'shield against humidity for 24 hours', thus stopping frizz before it starts
3. No sticky residue as it's ultrafine and fast-drying
4. Leaves a 'healthy shine to finish your style'
5. Protects against environmental damage with UV filter
To use, you simply shake the can, hold about 30cm from hair and spray over your hair. I like that this is used as a fine mist finishing spray rather than one you use on damp hair because it's more convenient to use this way, is something you can use to 'top up' during the day and seems to have more of an effect than damp hair sprays I've used in the past.
The spray is easy to use with the push down mechanism and gives out the fine mist it suggests, meaning it goes evenly over hair. I actually really like the smell of it too because it's sweet and feminine, and you can notice it on your hair during the day which I find appealing because it's not overpowering, nor does it simply smell of chemicals. It also dries quickly and I've not noticed any stickiness or residue, with my hair actually feeling a bit softer and tamer after having used it. I don't feel the need to wash my hair to get any 'gunk' out either so it's light and gives my hair a natural feel. I can't say I've noticed much of a shine, but my hair doesn't seem as dull when I've used it so I'd say it looks healthier when spritzed all over.
I can't comment on all of the 5 'vital benefits' such as the environmental protection due to the UV filter, but it does seem to cover most of the other points. As for the weather resistance, it's going to vary depending on your hair and how it normally takes to the weather anyway. My hair seems to have thinned a lot over the last couple of years so it's not as frizzy or thick as it used to be when I struggled against even the slightest bit of damp, but it's still noticeable. The spray does seem to help in terms of keeping frizz at bay because I've noticed my hair retain its style a little better (a basic style, nothing spikey or fancy though) and there's less frizz from rain or humidity.
Overall, I've actually been quite impressed by this spray. It's very pleasant to use and does what it suggests. Compared to similar products that make lots of big claims, it's also reasonably priced and looks good on the bathroom shelf or in your handbag too. It works well for me on a fairly basic style and medium thickness hair, so I can't really comment on other hair styles or thicker hair that may be more frizz-prone, but it's definitely one I'd suggest giving a go.
This can be bought in the regular 400ml size for around £3.05 (Boots) or a more travel friendly 100ml at the cheaper price of £1.69 (Sainsburys).
Overall... A pleasant hairspray that works well but won't guarantee super shine and completely frizz-free hair in thicker styles.

Today I am reviewing the VO5 weather resistant hairspray.
The Can is a hot pink colour which really stands out on the shelf like all the VO5 products. It tells me that it is the Ultimate hold, has 5 vital benefits and is a weather resitant hairspray. The hairspray weighs 278g and has 400ml of product in so it is a very big can. I love the VO5 packaging and always have, not only is pink my favourite colour but I think the sparkles just make it look really pretty and give it an edge.
I was singing at a show the night I first wore this hairspray so I didn't want to look silly with my hair falling out as I had it is a backcombed, scruffy bun. I sprayed this hairspray on all over my head and it dried very quickly leavng y hair feeling like it had hairspray on it, so it was kind of hard but it wasn't all stuck together and sticky. It stayed up all night and I was very happy with it. The smell is amazing,as is the smell of all the vo5 products so I was pleased with that. It also was very windy the next time I wore it and my hair stayed in place amazingly well.
It claims to have 5 vital benefits
1)All day hold - True - Brilliant hold
2)Weather Protection - Fabulous
3)Ultrafine Fast-drying Spray - True but that's not special
4)Healthy shine - Didn't really notice
5)UV filter - Winter, so I can't comment
i really liked this hairspray and as it is on offer at superdrug at the moment for 2 selected vo5 products for £4.90 or something like that it's a really good deal as the hairspray alone is £4.05. This is a really effective hairspray that does what it says on the can,
I bought the travel size version of this product in boots. I was going away for the weekend and didn't want to take a big bottle. Although I had never tried this hairspray before I was mainly drawn to it due to the sticker on the front which said '9 out of 10 Cosmopolitan readers recommend!', so I thought i'd give it a try. I have a fringe which always needs to be styled and sprayed into place, my main issue is the weather which always blows my fringe around and makes it look messy.
The night I first wore the hairspray it was quite rainy and windy, so I thought it would be a good test. When I first used the hairspray I was very pleased with it, I sprayed my fringe into place and also sprayed onto my brush to smooth down my flyaway hairs, this worked fabulously. The hairspray not only adds volume to a style and slicks a style into place it also smooths hair. Once I headed out into the horrible weather the hairspray was great at keeping my fringe in place, it did not blow around at all. Definitely works better than my boots brand hairspray which I usually use, all night my fringe stayed in place (and I didn't have to use much product on it). The only problem I found throughout the night was that my fringe did not look smooth, it looked as if I had product on it and quite dry.
The product claims to have 5 vital benefit:
1)All day hold - This I believe to be true, the hold of the hairspray is fantastic.
2)Weather Protection - Also true, the rain and wind had no affect on the styling of my fringe.
3)Ultrafine Fast-drying Spray - True but the majority of hairsprays do this.
4)Healthy shine - True initially and when put on the ends of my hair but definitely untrue in terms of my fringe. I think if you only use a tiny amount this deems to be true.
5)UV filter - Can't really comment
Overall I do like the product, I would purchase it again but would probably only use on particularly bad weather days where I need extra hold. I also like the packaging and smell of the product. I believe it deserves 4 stars as it does what it says on the can.
I have never really been the sort of girl who uses hairspray, i never actually believed it did much apart from leaving your hair feeling stiff, sticky and straw-like this was however before i found VO5 Ultimate Hold! I must admit it isn't something i use everyday but when i need a more structured style it is the first product i reach for.
What made me buy this?
First of all the price - it was under a fiver and the tin was a large size. Also i am unfortunately blessed with an addiction to buying anything new so when i spotted the promotional sign from across the shop floor and a lovely pretty looking pink and silver can glistening in the light...I had to have it!
What does this product do?
Well it does what it says on the tin... I use it for holding my stray hairs in place (My tip would be spray the hair, leave a couple of seconds and then brush through for a sleek, shiny style) This product is also great for up do's especially keeping a bun in place all day. As stated in the name this product is meant to be 'Weather Resistant' yes it does stop that fly away look you get on a hot humid day but avoid heavy showers at all cost as the product makes your hair slightly sticky and once dry rather unmanageable. Anyhow it's still a great product.
Overall i would definitely recommend purchasing this hairspray - it brushes out very easily and is great for maintaining sleek, perfected styles. It smells rather pleasant too in comparison to some of the cheaper versions on the market. And if all else fails the can looks pretty just sitting on the dressing table.
I have never really been one for wearing hair spray but this one is actually really good. I like to buy the hair sprays which are a little more expensive than the value editions because at least you know what is in it. The thing I like about vo5 is that every single product that they do smells gorgeous and very clean.
Now this product states that it is weather resistant and I can tell you, this is true. I have quite long hair and I put my hair in a quiff which was quit tall and with a fringe I usually get the baby hair which tends to fall down but not with this! I didn't spray a lot of hair spray on because I don't like it when it goes sticky and I also do not like it when it is really obvious as well so with a small spray it really holds my hair well. My can is actually blue but seems to be the same product so whether or not they have updated it I do not know.
This has a 24 hour humidity protection and I also tested this when I took it to turkey and it stops your hair from going frizzy at night when the air goes really muggy and close. If you want to remove this I think you should apply a little more conditioner than usual just to make sure it doesn't damage your hair because when you brush it with hair spray in, I am always scared that it will split. This bottle that I have in front of me is in a blue 250ml can, look out for it in the supermarket and other beauty stores for around £3.00.
Thanks for reading.
I only started using hairspray often due to never finding one at a reasonable price that does the job its meant to do. This one is meant to be weather resistant so I wanted to try it even more.
Which is why when there was an offer to get the 400ML for free I went for it!
It is available cheapest 100ML for £1.69 and collect 4 points or 400ML for £2.99 and get 8 points at boots. It comes in different strengths from normal, strong and extra strong - price does not change depending on strength.
It comes in a bright pink bottle and lid with silver ovals down the sides so for any guys who may want this I do hope this wont put you off buying it! Of course with the V05 logo on the front! It is also quite light so should be no trouble in your bag.
It also says weather resistant on the front with an umbrella coming off the "t" in weather.
About the product
Hold away from your hair - if it goes that sticky way its usually because you've held it too close its not because of the hairspray quality. Spray where wanted at leave it for a minute to settle.
On the back it has 5 vital benefits
All day hold - When I have used it if I use a good amount on my hair it will last for hours till I go to sleep usually.
Weather Protection - Through wind it has held well on my fringe unless its quite strong - where I put the spray, with rain it usually wont hold.
Ultimate Fast-drying Spray - It dries really quickly when you put it on so you don't have to worry about being really careful
Healthy Shine - I haven't ever noticed a shine on it so I dont think this ones true
UV Filter - To protect the hair from UV rays from the sun which of course I can't tell if that works or not
I think this is a great hairspray and worth paying for, it's cheap which is good and does better than ones that cost more! Doesn't leave hair feeling sticky or that crumbly way others do.
Nice eye catching packaging, light so it's easy enough to take with you on nights out or anywhere your going.
I'm only giving it 4 stars due to it not holding in all weathers like it says and it doesn't leave the "healthy shine"
When it comes to purchasing and using hairspray I'm not really a one for it. However I do occasionally need to use it as I possess thin, flyaway hair and I do like to wear my hair up and off my face and in a tidy style from time to time, particularly when I'm out and about at my local beach and don't want it in my eyes and flying everywhere lol!
The other day I spotted this 'New' hairspray whilst mooching about in Boots and on offer costing £1.49 for a huge can of the stuff and from a brand I know of well i decided to give it a go...I really did like the eye catching bright pink can if I'm totally honest with you!
The can is long and Cylinder IN SHAPE and holds 400ml of the hairspray. The can is bright pink and silver with a matching pink push button aerosol button to the top of it and a pink plastic see through lid that securely goes over the top of that and removes with ease. On the front of the can I am told that it is 'New' Alberto V05 Ultimate Hold Weather resistant Hairspray and that it has 5 vital benefits 'Long lasting ultimate hold ultrafine spray, easy brush out, leaves hair soft' and there is a picture drawn on there of a brolly. Other information on the back of the can includes being told about the product, directions for use and tips are given, directions for use and ingredients are listed as are cautions and the size stated and contact details for Alberto Culver are given (the manufacturer of the product). Nice, feminine can this is and the information is nicely laid out and understandable and its easy to use etc and I really do like the size of this product (the only size I have seen this available to purchase in).
A Bit About The Product According To The Information Given On The back Of The Can:
New V05 Weather Resistant hairsprays with 5 vital benefits, give you the confidence that your style can withstand the elements.
5 Vital Benefits:
All day hold that brushes out easily, leaving hair soft to touch
Weather protection provides a shield against humidity for 24hrs, preventing frizz
Ultrafine fast-drying spray, with no sticky residue
Healthy shine to finish your style
UV filter to help protect against environmental damage
Well all you do with this hairspray of course is to 'set' your style when your happy your hair is how you want to wear it. I spray mine as a fine mist from arms length or I apply a little of the spray to a brush and apply it damp to my hair to give me some added lift, particularly around the crown as I get really flat and lifeless looking hair there and appreciate a small amount of omph!
This is easy to apply to my hair. It comes out of the sprayer evenly and moist and has a light slightly floral and pleasant smell to it which isn't one bit old fashioned or nasty, just fresh and light but girly.
I do have to spray this at quite a distance from my hair though or it makes my hair wet though to be entirely fair to it, it does dry fast and doesn't make hair sticky, greasy or stiff.
I find this to be a really good, light sort of hairspray though being called ultimate hold I expected something more controlling than this is.
It does hold hair in place and in a none sticky way. It really does feel very natural on the hair, helps calm and sooth hair and keeps it in place a bit however not in really bad sea air wind! It works ok and fights humidity well though meaning frizz doesn't keep appearing when you have this on your hair though like I say in my experience wind really does upset my fine and flyaway hair badly after using this.
I can create volume in my hair but over time I find that the volume that I have created does drop out of my hair after using this sadly over time but it still keeps frizz at bay alot. It does give a light natural looking shine to my locks, keeps it smelling clean and fresh for a good couple of hours and does brush out with total ease.
It isn't a bad hairspray to be fair to it but I feel it being called ultimate hold is a bit misleading. It has a more of a light hold though if I use loads of it I can stick most of my hair in place for longer but if like me you have fine hair and want complicated, intricate styles then this may not be the option for you. However if you want a light hold and a bit of a shine and to feel like you don't have hairspray on your hair at all this could be perfect for you and it does seriously fight the frizz and humidity of nothing else.
Available in all good chemists and supermarkets etc and if not on offer will usually cost about £2.99 a can.
