The company make the product in the USA but are based in Barcelona, Spain. This explains why people in the UK don't see this on the shelves in Boots and Superdrug etc. American Crew do a range of products for hair with varying levels of hold and shine. The American Crew Molding Clay comes in the signature dark brown slightly transparent tub. The logo and information remains constant but the colour of the sticker changes for different products. This yellow sticker is for the High Hold and Medium Shine which i am reviewing.
The product is very similar to the American Crew Fiber product, both rather stiff and strong with regard to hold. The added bonus you get with the Moulding Clay product is a bit more shine instead of the matt finish. This seems to add more definition to your hair. This product is perfect for all styles of hair, has enough hold to place rather heavy hair and keep it styled. The Clay smells citrusy, rather like lime, which is pleasant on you fingers.
The product is stiff when you remove it from the tub, but easy to mould and spread in your fingers to then apply to the hair. The value of this tub is the same as all tub, around £10 for the 75g tub and around £7 for the 50g option. For the price the large tub is better if you are just trying to try out the product maybe try the 50g option. The level of shine is perfect. Not too glossy to look like nasty hair and not so dry to be stiff and solid. In comparison to the Fiber its down to preference with regard to shine as the products other features are identical. I have both depending on the look I'm going for or how i feel.
Although its a tough product the actually washing out of the clay is really easy, your normal wash will work with it. As i have found before its best to apply to damp hair. It advices towel dry hair, i find as i have a lot of hair towel dry is too wet meaning the product doesn't distribute very well and looses some hold. Dry hair however makes it hard to run your hands through and spread the product.
I really suggest this product as a basis if you are looking for a more upmarket product from the street brands. It does cost marginally more than others but is so worth it, it works very well and looks awesome. There are no negatives - the distribution of the hair isn't a problem, it may just take one attempt to work out how much you need in your hair with what level of moisture.
