Advantages: smooth, sleek hair, gorgeous smell
Disadvantages: none
I had never heard of the Angel Fish brand until I was searching for a new hair serum and was drawn to a shelf full of full of hot pink hair products in Boots. Not only were they packaged in such young, funky colours and designs, but they were on special offer too, so I couldn't resist picking up a bottle of the Sleek Fish Smoothing serum to try.
It seems that the Angel Fish brand is the female branch of Fish hair products - a range of men's styling products which have been around for years.
The bottle has a pump action dispenser and as I said is bright pink. The name Angel Fish is adorned with silver wings and a halo, and it does look particularly young, as though it might be aimed at women in their teens or early twenties.
In case you're not familiar with the concept of a serum, basically, it's a product which is applied to the hair, usually to smooth any fly-away hairs or frizz, and give a glossy finish. I suppose the most well-known serum around would be Frizz-Ease by John Frieda, which unfortunately I don't think lives up to all the hype. Anyway, this particular serum states that it is anti-frizz, will give a high gloss finish, rejuvenate split ends and has UV defensive filters, all of which sounds good to me.
My first impression of the serum was that it was quite thick. I've used a lot of different serums over the years, and in general I find that thicker serums are not very good because they often are difficult to run through the hair, and can therefore go on thickly making the hair look greasy. I am pleased to say that this product appears to be the exception to the rule...
Like any serum, only a small amount is needed. I have fairly long, thick hair, which I straighten, so I tend to separate it into about six sections and use one pump of serum for each section, but this is probably a lot - shorter or finer hair will need much less.
The serum runs easily through the hair and doesn't feel sticky at all. The biggest plus point for me though, has to be the fragrance. This has a strong coconut smell, which is beautiful - really fresh and of course summery, which is great at this dull and miserable time of year! I don't think I've ever used a serum that smelled so good - most of them tend to have a slight floral scent, but nothing like this, it's heavenly! The scent also stays on the hair for a while after using it, which is nice too.
The results this serum gives to the hair are amazing. It smoothes down frizz well, and also keeps it down. Some products are great until there is a bit of humidity and then they seem to give up and all the frizz and fly-aways return, but this one has great staying power. Although initially it is thick when applied to the hair, it doesn't weigh it down, or make it feel or look greasy, which I have been pleasantly surprised by. It gives the hair a nice sheen without being too over the top - it simply makes the hair look healthy.
A 50ml bottle of this serum costs £4.88 from Boots stores or www.boots.com. For a serum this is actually fairly reasonable, most of them tend to retail at the £5-8 mark, so even though it's a small bottle, I'm more than happy to pay this for it.
I've been looking for the perfect serum for a while now, since my former favourite by Charles Worthington was discontinued. With Angel Fish Sleek Fish Smoothing serum, I think I may finally have found it. It's a beautiful, lightweight serum, which gives the hair an incredible feel, and has the most amazingly tropical coconut smell. I would thoroughly recommend this product, and will be heading out to Boots to buy a second bottle soon!
Summary: A true angel
