Advantages: Cheap, fresh smelling, easy to use, doesn't leave a residue.

Disadvantages: Could be a bit thicker

I'm a woman on a mission, a mission to reduce my supermarket spending. One of my worst offenses is expensive shampoos, the fruitier the bettter. I love the Body Shops range of zesty citrus shampoos although at £5.35 a 250ml bottle they're extortionately overpriced. My husband was almost ecstatic when I announced they'd discontinued my favourite range.

As part of my quest to find a comparably lively shampoo, but without the equivalent price tag, I've tried a range of shampoos including the Original Sources eye wateringly minty shampoo which left me feeling hungry all day thanks to its lingering scent.

I did say I'd try anything, once. Which is how I ended up with a bottle of Asda Family Apple shampoo. An oh for goodness sake shut up about it gift from my long suffering husband. Had I been aware back then that it cost a mere 85p a 750ml bottle I'd probably have donated it to the daughters to use liberally in the bath washing their My Little Ponies manes (which incidently they do anyway) as it was I gave it a try and was very pleasantly surprised.

Despite the rock bottom budget appearance of the packaging the shampoo itself is quite thick, very smooth and remarkably appley. I did find I needed to use about 50% more than normal but then I was used to a highly concentrated gloopy shampoo wheres thick is more like a thick liquid than a runny jelly. It lathers up well, rinses out easily and my hair smells slightly fruity when dry. In fact I've been so impressed that I've purchased the complimenting apple conditioner too which at 68p for 500ml is equally well priced.

It just goes to show you don't need to spend a fortune on hair care to feel a million dollars.

Summary: Fresh smelling hair without breaking the bank.
