Asda Hairspray Extra Firm Hold
Advantages: Holds hair in place, cheap, gives a shine, brushes out well.
Disadvantages: Doesn't leave hair hard or crunchy or greasy.
When I tie my hair back I get those horrid wispy bits that no matter how hard I try never stay where I put them and generally after the course of the day fly around all over the place leaving my hair resembling something of a birds nest so I always apply some hair spray to keep it in place. I was going through various brands and enjoyed the VO5 one in the pink can but at £2+ it was too expensive so while I was in Asda I decided to pick up their version of 'Extra Firm Hold'.
*~* Price And Availability *~*
As this is an Asda brand it is only available from their stores or online. At a cost of just 67p per can (the price often fluctuates but the last can I purchased was this price) this I feel is excellent value for money.
*~* Packaging *~*
The can holds 300ml and is tall and slim like most hairspray cans. It is tall and shiny silver with purple splashes here and there. The back tells us the normal information, how to use, ingredients, safety information and contact details. It doesn't look cheap but it doesn't look overly expensive either but for the price I'm not really fussed what it looks like anyway. The top has no cap and instead just a plastic cap that holds the spray mechanism. The button on the first try has to be pushed down harder than normal but after this it is simple enough to just press down gently to release the hairspray inside. You do have to be careful not to drop it too often, on a couple of occasions the plastic top has snapped down the front rendering the can very difficult to use so this is a drawback but if you're not a butterfingers like I am then it shouldn't be a problem.
*~* Using The Spray *~*
I styled my hair as I usually would and then when done I held the spray at arms length which is essential for ensuring you don't end up with crunchy hair! and lightly sprayed over the parts I needed to stop the flyaway's popping up. The spray came out at a decent speed and gave good coverage. I didn't need much of this at all so I find that as I don't use it every day more like a couple of times a week that this lasts a really long time, around 2 months I would say which is excellent value for money. There is a strange scent to this hairspray like a conventional chemical scent that someone has lobed some floral scent at to mask it which doesn't quite work. It's not unpleasant and it doesn't linger but it is strange.
The spray didn't leave my hair crunchy or greasy looking, it perhaps had a little more shine to it than normal but not that it looked horrible. I found that it left my hair in place for most of the day and didn't start misbehaving until I brushed it out when the day was done which I was impressed with. On windy days it doesn't hold quite as well but it isn't as bad as leaving my hair with no spray at all.
*~* Overall *~*
Overall I think that this is an excellent buy, it is long lasting and holds my hair in place. It has a bit of a shine to it without looking greasy and it doesn't have that crunch to it either. It brushes out easily and doesn't leave my hair with knots or anything like that and for the price I think it's perfect. The only flaw is the sensitivity of the cap if you drop it but if you can live with that then I'd definitely give this a go.
Summary: An excellent alternative to expensive hairspray.
