Advantages: cute and effective packaging
Disadvantages: potentially harmful to humans
I have been using Aussie Mega Shampoo for years, but in looking at the ingredients, I have to admit I didn't know what any of them were. I did a bit of research and would like to share my findings: The second ingredient after water is Sodium Laureth sulfate - this chemical causes liver cancer in lab animals and may be a human health risk. Next is sodium Lauryl sulfate - linked to cataracts and nitrate absorption (wall street journal Nov1/88). Shampoo can easily penetrate the skin through hair follicles. There is actually 2 - 3 times more absorption than via hairless skin because the hair follicles are 'holes' that let the toxins in. Sodium lauryl sulfate further increases absorption of some chemicals - preservatives, fragrances and color additives - ("cosmetics and the skin" 1964). Not only is sodium lauryl sulfate damaging and drying to the skin, but it denatures protein too. Further down the list of ingredients you will see Propylene glycol - a common humectant - that literally can change the brain activity in chemically sensitive people (the medical post - Sept 27/94) In light of this information I have switched to an organic shampoo, which is absolutely wonderful and gives me peace of mind as well.. Our skin is a huge sponge. What goes on it, gets into the bloodstream. Be careful what you use and KNOW what you are using. Aussie Mega shampoo is by NO means the only shampoo using these ingredients - most do. But you and I have choices and how you spend your money and what you spend it on has great influence. Demand and buy organic and safe products and we will get them! For further information read "beauty to die for", by Judi Vance available at your local library.

- 19/06/03 Sorry about the low rating. It's just that this seems more of a warning about ingredients that are in nearly all such products rather than a review of the shampoo.
Having said that, I think it is right to be concerned about the horrible chemicals they include in beauty products. |

- 19/06/03 It is worrying and your findings certainly make interesting reading but I think theres so many products out there like this its impossible to use totally safe products all the time. Lisa x |
