Advantages: Price

Disadvantages: Did not give my hair volume or texture; some controversial ingredients

A week or so ago I was sat in front of the mirror, staring at my hair in despair. I had washed, conditioned, blow-dried it and straightened out the silly kinks as usual so why was it hanging limply and slightly greasily from my head? Then I remembered, that morning I had used a bottle of Avon Advance Techniques Volume & Texture Body Building Shampoo after running out of the Pantene I had been using previously.

Now, a little background on my hair. It is very fine although there is quite a lot of it. It is short and has a determined and rather crazy kink to it which has to be eliminated through the use of hair straighteners otherwise I end up with schizophrenic hair which is poker-straight on top and curling crazily everywhere else.

I tend to use volumising shampoo to give my hair a little more volume and stop the straight bit at the top from clinging to my head. Usually I stick to Pantene Enhanced Layers as this seems to make my hair look its best but feeling brave, I decided to try Avon. Actually, the main reason I bought this Avon shampoo was because I was feeling guilty for not having bought anything from our nice Avon lady for a while. Plus it was cheap; I bought the shampoo and conditioner together for just £2.

The shampoo comes in a 250ml bottle with a flip top cap. The shampoo itself has a pleasant fragrance which reminds me of the smell of my hairdressers. It is clear in colour but it does not foam up as well as other shampoos I have used so is fairly hard to distribute throughout your hair.

As mentioned above, when I first used this shampoo I found that it made my hair very limp, lifeless and hard to style. My hair is not generally greasy but this shampoo made it look greasy at the roots in particular. I have used it for a week now and have to say that it does not get any better. I will definitely be buying some more Pantene the next time I go shopping and will put this shampoo away for emergency use only!

For those of you interested in the ingredients of the toiletries you buy, the shampoo is apparently "formulated with Creatine plus Amino Peptides to help thicken and strengthen hair, add body and increase volume." As well as these ingredients, the shampoo contains Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLE) amongst other things. There has been quite a bit of debate recently about whether these chemicals are safe for use in shampoo and other toiletries. While it has not been proven whether these are carcinogenic, it seems SLS can cause irritation in some individuals and may be worth avoiding. However, there no parabens in this product which is something I suppose.

Avon Advance Techniques Volume & Texture Body Building Shampoo and the matching conditioner are currently available for £1.35 each from avonshop.co.uk although I certainly would not recommend that you buy them.

Summary: Best avoided if you actually want volume and texture to your hair
