Advantages: left hair smooth and soft and hydrated, fairly cheap
Disadvantages: didn't do much for the appearance of my hair
My mam is an Avon rep, so often when I go to her house, I have a quick browse through the latest brochure and order a couple of things.
When I saw the Planet Spa Mediterranean hot oil treatment on special offer, I decided to give it a try because I've been meaning to try a hot oil on my hair for ages and never quite got round to it.
When I received my bottle, I had a look on the back to see how to use it, but like many Avon products there were no instructions. Having not used this type of product before, I was a little perplexed, but then realised that there is a label on the back which actually peels apart and the instructions are written underneath. I thought that was a bit ridiculous to be honest, and mentioned it to my man. She told me my sister had bought the same product, and she hadn't known what to do with it either, and hadn't realised the label peeled back, so my mam said she'd mention it to her customers who had also bought the product in case they were having the same problem.
It turns out that you actually need to immerse the bottle in hot water for one minute before applying to the hair. As the bottle is fairly small, I filled a mug with water and placed it in there. I actually boiled the kettle and left it about 10 minutes to cool down, but when I came to using the oil I found it was very hot and almost burning my skin, so in the future, I'll be using cooler water with this product.
It says on the bottle that you should shampoo after using this product, so I took that to mean that it didn't really matter if my hair was clean or not beforehand. You should wet the hair, apply the oil, leave for one minute, then rinse.
The bottle only holds 50ml, and I wasn't sure how many uses I'd get out of it, as my hair is fairly long and thick. In fact, I applied about half of the bottle and that seemed enough. The product has a really nice smell - it is like olive oil, but is muted and very pleasant. It was easy to apply too and went onto my hair easily.
Once I rinsed I could immediately feel a difference. Despite not having yet shampooed it, my hair felt detangled and quite smooth. To be honest, not having used an oil on my hair before, I'd been a bit worried and deliberately chosen a day I was off work to use it, in case it made a total mess of my hair, and that way I'd have time to fix it before having to see anyone!
Once dry my hair felt just as smooth. The scent of the product didn't linger, but I think that's probably down to the fact you need to shampoo your hair immediately after use, so the shampoo scent covers it.
In terms of appearance I don't think my hair looked all that different. I can't claim that it was shinier or brighter, however when it comes to condition, I thought it felt much improved.
My thick, normally quite dried out coloured hair, felt soft, smooth and moisturised, and certainly for the day after using this, the amount of frizz I normally experience was a lot less than I usually get after washing my hair. It also wasn't at all greasy which is something I had worried about, given that this is an oil.
A 50ml bottle costs £2.50 from Avon or online at www.avonshop.co.uk, but you may be able to get it cheaper, as mine was on special offer at just £1.25.
So in conclusion, I was very happy with this product. It wasn't spectacular - I would have preferred to have seen improvements to the appearance of my hair too, but I'm more than happy with the improvement in condition that I saw from using this. I would definitely use this again, and would recommend it as perhaps a weekly treatment to perk up your hair.
