Advantages: Nice long flex, straightens hair beautifully

Disadvantages: Doesn't do what it should.

I have got into a bit of 'hair rut' over the past couple of months, I tend to wear my hair 'au naturelle' (ie wavy) if I am feeling lazy, or poker straight if I can be bothered to plug in the straighteners! Following a recent visit to the hairdressers where I left with a tumble of cascading curls I decided that maybe I could introduce a further style to my repertoire...new year, new me!

I saw this product on sale at my local Boots store (£35) and it resembled the gadget that my hairdresser had used, so decided to give it a go. The appliance resembles a cross between a pair of straighteners and curling tongs. There is a straight flat plate that heats up with curved plates on either side which stay cool. There are 3 heat settings on the appliance, and a really, useful long cable.

The instructions say that it is easy to achieve curls in just one easy stroke, so eager to prove them right I plugged in my new toy. The theory is that you place a section of hair between the heated plates, then gently pull down the hair shaft twisting the iron through 180 degrees and by the time you reach the end of your hair you will be amazed by the beautiful curl awaiting you. Well, as I say that is the theory, the practise was a whole different ball game!

After following the instructions to the letter I was left with a section of poker straight hair, not a curl in sight. I persevered for a number of times, but still not a single curl was on my head. I re-read the instructions again to see where I was going wrong. I found that in some sections it tells you to turn 180 degrees . sometimes 90 degrees, sometimes clockwise, sometimes anti-clockwise. Very confusing!

I looked on the internet and found a video on the Amazon site that showed how to use this appliance, but to be honest, I am still no wiser. I am really disappointed and feel that I have just wasted my money on yet another pair of straighteners that I really don't need. Perhaps I am missing something really obvious, but for now, my bottom drawer has gained another item that seemed like a good idea at the time!!!

Summary: Not as easy as it first appears.
