Advantages: The quick curls you desire..

Disadvantages: May be damaging - but aren't they all!

Its always been something of a mystery to me why my hair cannot decide if it wants to be straight or curly - so I have always had to use a bunch of hot styling products to keep it from being statically wavy.. Since I decided I wanted curly hair occasionally I knew I would have to buy something that could provide those curls with as little hassle as possible.. Having tried a few curlers in the past with no luck, this was the next on my list!

~*~ So what is the Babyliss You Curl? ~*~

Advertised as a revolutionary curler, this curling iron has a different look to all other curlers on the market.. Gone is the traditional barrel curler in with a new type. A half barrel split into two sections and two hot plates between.. In essence they are a straightener with curved cooling plates that heat up in seconds!

The curlers themselves have three separate settings which have no actual temperatures on, which isn't so good in the first place..
The curlers are at the desired temperature in literal seconds, so no long wait before you can use them..
No worries about burning your fingers while you curl, there are cool tips on the end to hold whilst you use them to keep away those burnt fingertips..
They also have ultra-fast heat recovery, meaning you get maintained heat for all curls..

~*~ Sounds good - but does it work? ~*~

Well given I have had my curlers 6 months I thought I have had enough time with them to give you a full and frank opinion about them..

Just to start with one thing I will say it that the effects of the curlers will vary depending on what type of hair you have.. Personally my hair is quite fine, and in essence a total pain in the behind!

However, when you open the box you are faced with your new curlers all wrapped up in plastic with the usual ties and plug covers, also in this box you get a guide which is to help you use your new curlers.. There are step by step plans, with pictures to show you how to create perfect curls.. As I said before, if you have the hair they seem to think you have these instructions, will happily curl your hair to the desired curliness..

This is how your meant to use your curlers...
Place your curlers with the curved edges to your head at the place you wish your curl to start..
Turn 180degrees so the curved edges are now facing the outside..
Then guide the curler through your hair until it reaches the tip of the strand..
Release - and you should have your perfect curl..

The instruction manual actually suggests you can do this either, with the curved edges facing your head or away when you start, providing you turn through 180degrees it should make no difference.. However I had an issue with this method and it just seemed to make the ends bend on my hair without really making any definitive curls... So, I devised a new method for creating curls..

I now place the curlers curved edge facing my head inside of on their side, vertical, and then as if I was using a normal curler, glide the hair through it that way.. That may not make a lot of sense, but trust me it works better.. It gives far better defined curls than the way Babyliss suggest and it is also a lot quicker in the long run..

~*~ Check out the curls ~*~

As always with curlers, the tightness of the curls is based around the thickness of the strand you use to curl it with. The thinner the strand the more defined the curl will be, I have also found with these that the thinner the strand the longer the curl lasts. Of course having thicker bands of hair to curl means larger curls with more bounce and movement, which also gives your hair a little more body.. I tend to mix both into my hair so it doesn't look too full of body before I leave the house..

One of the things I have found with this curler is that even if you haven't had time to put on any hairspray, you don't need to worry about the curls falling flat and uninteresting, as after a little while as with any curler they do fall slightly, thus leaving a more tousled look.. Which is something that looks good in summer! If that is the look you are going for, it is not easily created with the curlers alone, once curled it is best to run your fingers straight through while it cools, so the hair isn't going to stay in complete ringlets until it decides to go flat.. Be in control of your hair..!

~*~ Overall ~*~

These curlers definitely pick up were others fall down to be honest, I have a normal pair of curlers and these, if I could only pick on these would win out.. They have something that others don't, for example if you mess up a curl with a normal pair of curlers you would have to turn on your straighteners to get rid of it, however with these having the flat plates you can just run those over your mistake and within seconds have a strand ready for curling again..

The heat up time too is pretty amazing, from the moment you turn them on, you can usually have the time to perhaps grab a clip to section your hair and they are ready for using, and that is on the highest setting.. That is pretty good development from older curlers that took 4/5 minutes to heat up to full heat.. Meaning it doesn't take as long to do your hair as it used too!

These curlers are lightweight, with a salon length cord, with a swivel base in the bottom of the curlers meaning you don't have to move around them - they happily move around you.. The curls take a matter of seconds to form.. This is a revolution in curling and straightening because with these you can do both in seconds..

As always there are heat damage risks - as there are with most styling products, so I recommend using a heat defence product, (I use the Aussie one!) to ensure your hairs safety, and some good hairspray for after.. Other than that if you were considering a pair of these, you have my recommendation! They are a really effortless pair that you can use on a daily basis or for a more special occasion!

~*~ Price and Availability ~*~

The recommended retail price for these is £40 but they vary from shop to shop, each sale will promote them a different price, so it would be useless for me to write a price now because perhaps in 2 weeks time it will have changed..

Babyliss say these are available at the following..
Boots,
Superdrug,
Amazon, and Argos..
However, if you look in places such as Wilkinsons in their catalogue and other supermarkets, it is usually stocked there too!

Summary: Quick curls, fabulous curls, Well worth the £40!

A great review. I have always wondered about these curling irons. I now want to get them after reading your review as I also have hair that cannot decide if it wants to be straight or curly so thank you :)

I've always found Babyliss to be a good brand. Got some curlers for Xmas from a mate and erm, still haven't figured out how to use them properly as I tend to use my GHDs for curling as well as straightening... x
