Batiste Fresh Dry Shampoo
Advantages: refreshes greasy hair, quick and easy to use, great for travelling, good price
Disadvantages: takes patience to brush out fully, causes dandruff if used too frequently, weak scent
After having great success with Batiste's Tropical dry shampoo over summer and when travelling, I decided that this handy product was a must have and that I needed to keep it in stock. Superdrug had these on sale for just 99p for a 150ml can, so I snapped up a couple while they were available at better than half price (the usual RRP is £2.09).
Batiste say: "with a tantalising forest-fresh fragrance. For you. For him. Revitalises greasy, dull and lifeless hair between washes. Instantly leaves hair feeling clean, full of body and smelling fabulous. Quick and convenient to use wherever you are."
The packaging makes it very easy to spot this product on the shelf. It has the distinctive Batiste logo, and nice colouring with shades of blue being used to good effect. The dry shampoo comes in an aerosol can similar to a spray deodorant, and is covered with a plastic lid. The lid fits on tightly and stayed secure if you are carrying it around inside a bag, preventing any accidental spills over my other belongings.
Directions For Use: Shake can vigorously before use and in-between sprays. Hold can approximately 30cm from hair and spray lightly, giving even coverage. Use fingertips to massage through hair and leave for a few moments. Brush product out, preferably using a soft brush.
I make sure to shake the can thoroughly, and then spray directly over my parting, going on to give a smaller spritz on my fringe. I then tilt my head down a little and spray on the roots near the back of my ear and finish up by applying a good dose to the crown where most of the oil gathers in my hair. It is quite shocking the first few times you use it, as the dry shampoo creates a white covering over your hair and this can be particularly worrying if you have dark hair! On to the next stage, and I personally think this is the most important. Massage the dry shampoo into your hair. I rub it into the roots of my hair with my fingertips, just as I would if I was washing my hair with normal shampoo. This action allows the powdery shampoo to absorb any oils from your hair. I usually then leave it for a minute or so and repeat this step, rubbing it in again. Once you've done this then you can begin the brushing out process. You may need to repeat each section several times, but make sure you have thoroughly brushed out the entirety of the product as it will look very messy and noticeable if there's any left behind. It may help to angle two mirrors so you can view your hair from all directions, just as a final check to ensure that all is clear. Once you've finished brushing, you're done! I find this absorbs the majority of oils from my hair and leaves it feeling extremely fresh and rejuvenated. It even gives my flat limp hair a little boost and provides a bit of extra volume which lasts for a little while after you've brushed the dry shampoo out. This works really well to prep your hair before backcombing to help give lift.
After you get over the terror of having massive white patches of hair, you'll realise that this is actually quite a nice shampoo. The dry shampoo itself is like a fine, light powder and you must be careful to brush out the excess carefully or you could end up with little clumps of it left in your hairline that look similar to dandruff. The Fresh scent is nice enough, quite plain but with a fresh and clean smelling fragrance, just like you would expect from the name. The scent does not linger for long and is not noticeable as it fades away quite quickly.
My fringe seems to get greasy more quickly than the rest of my hair, probably as it rests against my face and will soak up oils from my moisturiser and make-up. It is a real time saver to be able to just give it a quick blast with this dry shampoo spray, brush out, and step out with my hair looking like it's been freshly washed. Because it is so practical and easy to use I ended up using it quite frequently, particularly for my fringe and crown. This frequent use did not work in my favour as it seemed to cause my scalp to dry out which left me with dandruff, and I stopped using it for a while until my hair went back to normal after washing only with normal liquid shampoo and conditioner. I have managed to get 18 full applications from my 150ml can, so it goes quite a long way and is long lasting.
Batiste Fresh Dry Shampoo claims to refresh hair between washes. It lives up to this promise and I have had good results when using it, although I now know from experience to not get too reliant on it! I would certainly buy it again and will look into the other variants available. This is a good value product that performs well and makes my hair look better as well as being environmentally friendly and time saving by requiring me to wash my hair with water less frequently! Great if your hair becomes greasy quickly and needs to be tamed. A quick and effective clean.
Summary: A good cleansing product but I prefer the Tropical scented version
