Advantages: Freshens up your hair, inexpensive, comes in a handy 50ml sized can
Disadvantages: May be visible in dark hair if not brushed out well.
Since my teens I have found that I have to wash my hair in the morning every single day and if I go a day without washing it, I have such a greasy barnet and, being blonde, it shows so clearly as my hair looks darker as a result of the offending grease. Sometimes, however, it just isn't possible to have a shower such as when one is camping or rocking out at a music festival so there has to be something out there to remedy this problem! And there is. Batiste Dry Shampoo. Now this is nothing new. Back in the 1970s my mum used to use dry shampoo (it may even have been Batiste as the product has been around since then!) from time to time as it wasn't considered (by some people) 'appropriate' to wash your hair during that special time of the month so she had to use dry shampoo. I remember also combing talcum powder through my hair when I was at school to absorb excess grease...how disgusting that sounds!
So, Batiste Dry Shampoo is necessary sometimes to freshen up your hair between washes. It comes in a variety of fragrances: Original, Blush (a floral scent), Tropical (a fruity, coconutty scent, the one I have) and a new, Boho scent. It comes in an aerosol can and is available in two sizes that I am aware of: 150ml and a handy, handbag sized 50ml size. The packaging has changed slightly compared to the picture above, although the tropical version is still yellow with a green lid and the palm leaves. The wording is in a funky retro font though.
The spray is like a powder which will absorb any excess oil and is quite highly fragranced to make your hair smell sweet. The fragrance stays in your hair for quite a few hours which is good, especially if you haven't washed your hair in the previous 24 hours!
When using Batiste it is important to follow the instructions on the can otherwise you will end up with a head of hair that you really will need to wash! Shake the can well, hold approximately 30cm away from your head and spray (not too liberally!) making sure you move the can around to ensure even coverage. Once you have done this, you have to massage it into your hair and then leave it for a few minutes to work its magic before brushing it out. I found that, being blonde, the product wasn't visible in my hair but I wondered how visible it might be in darker hair as it is a white powder.
There are ways to use the powder to help style your hair and if you have a look on the Batiste website it gives you some hints and tips. My hair is too short to style with it so I can't really say how successful this is.
As for cost, Batiste is accessible to all budgets. A 50ml bottle costs around £1.50 while the larger 150ml bottle costs around £2.07, it lasts for ages as it is not often you would need to use it, and when you do, you don't need to use a great deal. You will probably find it cheaper online so, as with anything, shop around for a bargain.
This is a product which I have found reliable and it works. It has obviously stood the test of time as it has been available for the past 30 years or so. At such an affordable price too there is never an excuse for a greasy barnet!
Summary: A must have product if you need to wash your hair often.

- 23/08/09 Ingredients are: butane, isobutane, oryza sativa (rice) starch, propane, alcohol denat, parfum (fragrance), coumarin, distearyldimonium chloride, cetrimonium chloride. Phew! A load of chemicals then! Good that it can be bought in Poundland. I wonder how much it costs....lol! :) |

- 23/08/09 What bizarre things people used to live by! My mum would wash her fringe in the sink and hope her mum didn't notice! Thanks for the comment :) |
