So, I'm sitting in my jogging bottoms and a manky t-shirt, drinking a cup of tea, when I get a phone call . It's my dad - he's bored, and he wants to go out for lunch . Never one to turn down a free meal, I agree, and he tells me he'll be down in a taxi to pick me up in twenty minutes .

Putting down the phone, I get into a panic - I look an absolute state, in my scruffiest clothes and my hair all over the place . I don't have a shower, and I certainly don't have time for a bath . I quickly run and get changed , slipping into some jeans and a nicer top . But what can I do about my hair ?

Luckily , I've discovered Batiste Tropical Dry Shampoo - and it's the perfect little time saver for situations just like these .

Until a little while ago, I'd never heard of this, until on a trip to the chemist to pick up a prescription, I found myself browsing other bits and bobs, and picking this up off the shelf. It had been sitting in my bathroom begging to be used ever since.

It advertises itself as being a unique dry hair shampoo; and it works by using a light talcum powder based spray which soaks up the dirt and grease on the hair. This isn't a new method - throughout history people have powdered their hair to keep it looking good , and not just recent history, by the Georgians in particular used lots of talc to keep their wigs fresh!

It claims to refresh and revitalise hair between washes, and to be quick and easy to use .

I have very thick dark hair - I have my chinese heritage to thank for that. I tend to wash my hair every couple of days, using a range of shampoos (I tend to pick up products that look fun and then mix them all up.) My hair is quite quick to fall flat and greasy though, and to become dull and lifeless . It was in exactly this horrible state when I was rushing around trying to quickly smarten up .

You have to give the can a good shake, then spray it over your hair lightly, holding it 30cm away from your head .The spray comes out quite fast , rather like a standard hairspray, and leaves a coating of very light powder on your hair, which you'll need to rub ingently with your fingers until its no longer visbible, then brush your hair out as normal .

It worked - it was incredibly easy to use, and my hair looked and smelt clean and just washed . Of course, I knew it wasn't actually clean, and touching it it still felt a little greasy, but as it's pretty unlikely anyones going to be touching my hair, thats not a problem . I looked much fresher and cleaner, and my hair looked healthy and I smelt wonderful , like coconut, banana and vanilla mixed together . After a little while, I couldn't smell the fragrance anymore, but my hair stayed looking good for a good 4 hours, certainly long enough to enjoy my lunch .

You can reapply this if your hair falls flat, and I imagine having a can of this in your handbag on a night out would be a good idea .

The packaging is an aerosol can with bright green, orange, and yellow colours - it looks tropical, and stands out on the shelf easily . I paid about 1.89 for my 150ml can from the chemist, although I have seen it on the shelves in supermarkets, so it does seem to be pretty widely available .

Thanks to this product I was able to go out for lunch at short notice without spending the whole time worrying about my hair looking horrible . It doesn't actually clean your hair, so is not a replacement for traditional shampoos and proper hair washing, but it's very handy for livening up dull, flat, greasy hair whenever you don't have time to wash it!
