Boots Essentials' Maximum Hold Hairspray
Advantages: Good value
Disadvantages: Doesn't hold my hair in position at all
Ever since getting my hair cut earlier this year, I have had to use hairspray everyday to get it sitting in some sort of shape until it grows long enough again to get it styled better. I have been through quite a variety of hairsprays, and although I know that the likes of the L'oreal Elvive is probably one of the best highstreet brands, I don't particularly like the price tag, especially given how much I go through.
Not long ago, I tried Wella Silvikrin and was very very impressed, and planned to continue purchsing this, because it really did hold my hair in place and was reasonably priced. One weekend recently however, when shopping in town with my mum I was in Boots, about to buy some more silvikrin when she suggested I try the Boots Own Essential Range Maximum Hold Hairspray, which firstly was better value (at £1.62 for a 450ml can) and she claimed that she found it very very reliable. With nothing to lose, and only pennies to save, I happily bought it.
I have tried a few other products from the Boots essential range, and I have noticed that they tend to be packaged in quite bright and vibrant colours, making it attractive on the shelf. Very often Boots also run either 3 for 2 offers on these products or other offers, but I simply purchased the one bottle to try. This maximum hold hairspray comes in a royal blue shiny canister, with the words 'maximum hold' reading vertically up the side. It also states on the front that this product is 'long lasting', 'leaves hair shiny and manageable' and 'brushes out easily'.
On the reverse of the canister it also claims to create 'supreme' hold. It states that it is 'fast drying' and won't cause stickiness. Brushing out is easy and won't leave flakiness, as well (according to the claims of the company).
I have been using this product for about a week and a half now, since my silvikrin has finished, and I really am not overly impressed. In fact, when I saw an average of 4 stars for a rating of this product here on dooyoo, I was quite surprised, as in my experience it doesnt deserve it. This last week and a half, have been a particularly difficult test for this hairspray, given the continual and often strong winds we have been having, but I haven;t found it keeping my hair in place much. In fact, from when I leave the house and head to work, when it comes in contact with a gust of wind, I might as well as put absolutely nothing on my hair, as it returns to the pre spray style. Even when I am applying it to my hair, I do no get the same sense of hold that I did with the silvikrin. I admit there is no stickiness and I certainly don't hve to go and wash my hands after spraying, but I feel that even after spraying, once I move, my hair doesn't always stay in place or in the position I want.
I have also noticed over the few days, although this may be entirely a coincidence, that my hair is flakier. I have a dry scalp, and need to keep it clear with regular use of head and shoulders, which always does the trick at keeping it clear and clean and flake free even when used in rotation with other shampoos, so I cannot see any other reason why I should notice a few flakes in my hair over the last few days, so I am left to wonder if it is through use of this hairspray, despite its claims that it won't leave flakiness.
So, to conclude, the claims that this hairspray is 'long lasting', I cannot say that I have noticed at all. If it was a very calm day then it may hold better, but I found it didn't matter when using the silvikrin spray even in gusty winds. Does it leave hair shiny and manageable? - well it may be shiny, but I think that is more to do with the shampoo's that I use rather than this product, and the other claim that it brushes out easily, well, I haven't even needed to brush it out as it doesn't keep my hair in position anyhow. I think this is a really disappointing product, and I will go back to using silvikrin. Pennies may have been saved but it really wasn't worth it on this occasion!
Summary: Not a good hairspray depsite its claims
