Advantages: Smells good, rinses out easily, cleans thoroughly

Disadvantages: None that I can think of

*When did washing my hair get to be so expensive?*

It's a great idea to overhaul the budget once in a while, as you might be shocked at the amount you spend on essentials. I decided to try Boots Expert Anti Dandruff Shampoo for Men after deciding that the current Boots price of ~£4 for a bottle of Head & Shoulders (or a steal at two for £7) was beyond the pale.

I'm no stranger to trying out own brands, although for some odd reason I've only just started to do this with toiletries and personal care products. This is probably as a result of non-stop television and magazine advertising for branded toiletries, one of the last great advertising successes in terms of market share.

*Availability, cost and affordability*

As is to be expected, this shampoo can be purchased from either the Boots high street stores, or their website at www.boots.com. I paid £2.49 for my bottle, although there was also a multi-save offer of two bottles for £4 (a real saving on the branded equivalent).

Although the more conventional cylindrical bottle looks a little smaller than some of the competitors, it is a generous 400ml, which should be enough to last me for a good 6 weeks. The label also recommends using a small amount, which is unusual for an industry where some of the largest suppliers seem keen to have you use massive handfuls of their products.

*What does it claim to do?*

The labelling for this product isn't wildly exciting, but the introduction for the shampoo is very well written. Getting down to brass tacks, it claims that it 'treats the causes of dandruff and thoroughly cleanses hair, leaving it soft and shining with health'. It manages to describe the product without resorting to hyperbole or being overly dramatic and I suspect that most guys will welcome this approach.

*What did it do for me?*

I'm pleased to report that the shampoo delivers exactly what it offers. I worked a small amount through my hair and was pleased with the light, clean and slightly citrus smell of the shampoo. It didn't lather up as much as my usual Head & Shoulders, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. I've recently been finding that the heavier shampoo never rinsed out properly, which was leaving me with an itchy scalp. After rinsing the hair was soft and clean and a quick 'fingers as a comb' test left them smelling good, without any residue or soap scum. Also, it should go without saying, but there's not a trace of dandruff.

*Packaging and environmental impact*

The product packaging is simple and understated, although not particularly eye catching. The ingredients and product description are clearly laid out in blue writing on a clean white background and the bottle is made of HDPE and is commonly recycled (for recycling aficionados it's a '2').

Summary: Boots deliver another great own brand product at a competitive price

Thanks Zoe - never thought of checking out supermarkets. Will need to see if my local Sainsbury's has something similar.

Tesco's own is good and even cheaper - like 78p or something ridiculous.

It's strange how I am more than happy to buy Sainsburys Basics curry sauce for 4p, but I can't bring myself to do the same for hair care products! You are totally right- we are all schmoozed by tv ads!
