Advantages: Cheap, on offer a lot
Disadvantages: Made my hair feel like straw, conditioner is pathetic!
Having recently found out I am expecting again I can't carry on bleaching my hair so needed a quick solution to get me back to my natural dark colour because my roots were getting bad. I decided to try Boots Permanent Rich Dark Chocolate colour, I bought two boxes today from boots, priced at £3.29 each they were on 3 for 2 (my 3rd item I didn't get dye with but leave in conditioner thankfully - more about that later!)
I have really thick hair and I am glad that I purchased two of these although to be honest I probably could've done with a third box too. The bottle of dye which you use to apply the colour is a lot smaller than brand named dye which I was quite surprised with but never the less I continued on. The instructions were simple to follow and advised how to do a strand test, once that was complete you were ready to go.
There's two tubes of cream in the box as well as the application bottle, one tube is the conditioner and the other is the actual dye, you squeeze the actual dye into the application bottle (once you're wearing your gloves which are of a high quality and fit really nicely considering I have tiny hands!) and shake until all of the mixture is one colour. Then you put it on your hair (or get someone else for you so you don't miss any.)
Once the application bottle/s empty you lather your hair into a foam, it mentions on the instructions not to be alarmed if the foam is a different colour to the one you are wanting your hair to be, my foam was purple and I most definitely did not want purple hair. You then pile your hair on top of your head and leave on for 20 minutes or the time indicated by your strand test.
The smell of the dye isn't as bad as others I have smelt, it still doesn't have a pleasant smell but is slightly sweeter than most, I would still advise to dye your hair in a ventilated place and cover anything you don't want dying, including your face, ears and neck with vaseline!
Once the 20 minutes is up you can start to rinse off the dye from your hair, this took me ages but at least I knew it was all out, then you put on the conditioner. The conditioner is very poor, the tube is tiny and yet expected to do more than one application, I used two full tubes out of both of my boxes and my hair still felt like straw so had to use some of my normal conditioner also to make my hair feel just a bit better.
Having washed it all off I then towel dried it before spraying leave in conditioner on to try to repair the damage done. I then let it dry naturally.
A couple of hours after I dyed it I decided to remove my headband and have a good look, to me it looked quite grey so I decided to blow dry the rest and straighten it. To be honest the finished look isn't as bad as I first thought and the extra conditioner has made it really soft. Even my husband commented how nice it is.
In all honesty I probably wouldn't recommend this hair dye due to how it made my hair feel after dying it, I have dyed my hair for many years and this other than when bleaching it was probably the worst it has felt. If somebody desperately wanted to dye their hair and didn't have much money then I guess this would be the only option.
There's around 8 different colours in this range ranging from light blonde to black, all priced at £3.29, they also do semi permanent dye too which I have used before and I must say out of the two it is better.
Summary: A cheap hair dye for people with little money!
