I got a small travel set of Bumble and Bumble products from Boots and this surf spray was one of the three items included.
I was determined to give it a go. In my head my normally straight hair would be transformed into natural looking and beautiful fresh from the beach surf style beach waves.
It was not meant to be. I followed the instructions having washed and conditioned my hair with other products from the range then I sprayed this product in and scrunched my hair...
Result? Terribly knotty hair. Nothing is worse than knotty hair to me and I really found this awful to use. It really was not for me so I passed it on to a work colleague who has pretty wavy hair.
I can't understand why people rave about this product. It felt sticky and gritty in my hair, like I'd had a fight with a candy floss machine!
Perhaps people with straight hair should not expect beach waves? That is the general conclusion that I have come to about this product, steer clear and never again for me!
The price of this is quite expensive, I got my set from the clearance shelf but generally expect to pay around ten pounds for a 50 ml spray bottle.
Ultimately, the only really nice thing I can think to say about this product is that I like the packaging, and the spray top is good for application if that's how you like to do my hair.
The bumble and bumble surf spray is one of the many things that I reach for every time my hair needs a boost. A few spritz into damp hair, and i'm left with wonderful amounts of volume and texture that any girl will envy.
I find it helps boost that tousled effect I love, and even a few spritz into day old hair, thats starting to become quite limp will leave me with lovely locks once again. To use, i spray on damp hair and use my fingers and a blow dryer to enhance the natural wavy texture i already have, along with giving a much more touseled effect. Casual beach chick here I come. When using this on dry hair, i essentially do the same thing, forgoing the hairdryer and using my fingers to work the product into the roots of my hair for that much wanted root lift.
The only problem I have with this is the way it leaves my scalp feeling, it does get quite itchy, more so when its put into dry hair so i tend to do this less often. It also smells very chemical.
It's a great product, i believe l'oreal and tigi have similar ones, which I plan to test once this is finished.
When I leave my hair to dry naturally, it looks awful. It just gets bigger and bigger, frizzier and frizzier, and more and more out of control. Somehow however, when my hair dries naturally on holidays after being in the sea, my waves are controlled and my hair actually looks quite pretty. I bought the Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray to try and recreate this look, although I wasn't holding my breath after having been let down in the past by similar products.
What does the product do?
The product is actually infused with salt just like the ocean. It promises to add volume and texture to the hair and claims to recreate the beach babe look in your hair. It doesn't have the drying effect that the ocean has on the hair because it includes Seaweed and Kelp Extract to hydrate your locks. It is suitable for those with wavy hair or those that want to create movement and texture in the hair.
How do you use the product?
The product is to be applied to hair that has been washed and conditioned. It should be sprayed evenly through damp hair and then you can either let your hair dry or dry it will a diffuser. I spray the product through my hair and then leave it to dry naturally as I wanted to use the product as a time saver instead of having to blow dry and straighten my hair.
Packaging and Price
The product comes contained within a smooth black bottle which has little decoration on the bottle other than some blue writing and a sunshine. It has a silver dispenser which you push down on in order to release the spray. The bottle costs around £15 and for that money, you will receive 125ml of the product. The product can be bought from large department stores and also from a variety of online websites.
Application and Performance
The product is simple to apply to the hair and the dispenser is easy to push, even if your hands are damp and slippery. The trick with this product is not to use too much. If you use too much, your hair goes hard and the product doesn't look very nice. About six sprays is more than enough in my long hair and I spray it on the length and ends of my hair, avoiding the roots. You also need to ensure that you aren't holding the product too close to the hair so that you get a even application. The product smells natural like the sea itself so it does remind me quite a lot of being on holidays.
When my hair dries, my hair has defined waves with plenty of texture and movement. The product removes all signs of frizziness from my hair and in fairness, it does make my hair look exactly the same as when I come out of the sea on holidays which was just what I wanted. It does feel a little bit itchy by the end of the day and it can get a little uncomfortable. As the product contains salt, it also dulls the hair a bit and makes my hair feel a bit dry despite the hydrating ingredients which means that this is only suitable for use once in a while.
All in all, this is the best salt spray that I have found so far. It can look bad if you use too much of the product or if you spray it too close, but if used effectively then you can achieve the perfect beach waves. It can get itchy and it's too drying for every day use. I still really liked the product however and it's perfect for the days when I can't be bothered to blow dry and straighten my hair. It keeps all of its promises and I would happily repurchase the product once it was all gone.
Although I have used Bumble and Bumble products in the past I have to admit I have not bought any for a while. The purchase of the B+B Surf Spray was a spur of the moment thing and the 125ml spray bottle cost around £15 online. There are always offers on such products from various online retailers, so it is worth shopping around for the best deal. The price may appear pricey - especially considering this is just a 125ml bottle, but B+B products are not cheap by any stretch.
The packaging is very striking, with a jet black bottle finished in a silver screw-on pump spray. This is done very neatly and oozes class and expense! The black bottle creates the perfect backdrop for the aqua coloured text and bright yellow sunshine, the wording reading 'Bumble SOUTH' and 'Surf Spray' which is the name of the product in question. It is evident to say that I love the packaging and it sets the tone for the product really.
According to B+B this 'Surf Spray' will give your hair a 'sexy, salty, windswept look', very much what you would expect after a day on the waves I suppose. You could say that B+B are trying to sell a lifestyle and I get the impression such a product is for aspirational individuals that have just arrived home from a few weeks in the Sun and Surf. I have to say that the look I did expect to achieve was the typical 'wet look', and I am most glad that this isn't what happened. A few sprays of the solution through my short hair allowed me to get good coverage - I don't need to use much. I style my hair using both my fingertips and a comb and were pleasantly surprised to see the finished look. The spray leaves my hair with a matte finish and not a shiny one, giving a more modern look and feel. Texture is plentiful and ensures my styling stands out for all the right reasons.
For best results I always apply it to damp hair, though I also do this as I find my hair easier to work for styling purposes. I let my hair and the spray dry naturally and the matte finish unfolds once dry. I always do the styling before the product has dried in my hair, as once it has dried and you start messing about with it I find it loses its hold and you start to comb the product out of your hair.
For the price the jury is still out, and if you aren't comfortable paying £15 for a hair styling spray then I can imagine you being disappointed. If you are looking for a very professional and stylish looking finish then B+B are a brand to turn to, and the results can be truly amazing if applied correctly. On short hair I find the Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray great, though there are still reservations over price.
I must say I am sliiightly disappointed with Surf Spray. It is, naturally, a cult classic so I thought I really must give it a go. My hair is naturally mousy brown, highlighted to mid blonde, and naturally wavy/curly, depending on the length.
Surf Spray is a perfectly ok product, and does the job, however it does often leave my hair with that horrible 'crispy' feeling, often associated with bad mouses! It can make my hair really quite dry feeling, so whilst it looks nice in photos and from afar, no man is going to want to run his hands through it!
It also awful if you want to go out and party in it, as then it becomes incredibly tuggy in the morning, especially if you drunkenly forget to brush your hair when you go to bed!
Overall I would say it is a good product as it delivers the effect it promises. But use it sparingly, and maybe only for photoshoots ;)
Having quite fine straight hair I am instantly drawn to anything that can give it more lift and body which is how I came across the Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray. The logic behind this product is to basically make your hair look and feel like you've just been for a dip in the sea, so it has a matte finish and can make your hair look touseled and windswept. I like to use a small spray whilst drying my hair and then after a few more sprays when dry before roughing it up, and ta darrrrrrr beach babe (ha let me pretend)
Unlike the actual sun and sea this spray contains seaweed extract to maintain your hairs moisture and help keep it managable. I would definate reccommend this to anyone who likes a messy look to their hair, not one for those who want a sleek shiny finish. The bottle does look quite cute on your shelf, its a black rubber bottle with quite simple wording on, the design does seem man friendly as well so maybe one to share with your fella!!
The downside would be the hefty price tag, although it is a high end brand and I was expecting to pay more for a quality, £17.50 for a 115ml bottle seemed quite steep! I could have shopped around for a better deal but I was lured by free samples! Bumble and Bumble isnt a product I have seen in any stores yet but it was fairly easy to find and buy on the internet
Are you someone who wants that tousled just off the beach look? Then this is the hair product for you! For years I have tried to create that look by using various gels, mousses etc. Nothing has been as good as this spray. It can be used on wet or dry hair, but I have found it works best if you part dry your hair and then spray it on, scrunch and complete the drying process. As a bonus, it smells really nice and the bottle has a fantastic rubbery feel in your hand! This actually means it wont slip around when you are trying to operate it with wet hands (there is logic!) The bottle looks quite small for the hefty price tag of around £18, but it does last a while and you really don't need to use a great deal. it really is better for achieving the 'beach babe' look than any less expensive product I have tried. Give it a go, you won't be disappointed.
Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray, i was lucky enough to have this brought for me as a Christmas Present and it is a great product, bit on the expensive side, but now i know that it is worth every penny i buy it, it is not a product i would buy if i just saw it in the shop and wanted to try it at around £15.00 a bottle.
Surf Spray is a product that has copied the summer feeling of being on the beach, without the pain of sand being there, Its helps to give your hair texture and volume that you would normally get after being on the beach. With the help of adding mositure to your hair to protect it and making it more managable.
It can be used by all hair types and is suitable for anyone to use and it smells fresh and clean too, unlike the sea smell you expect it to be.
For the best results spray on to damp hair and let dry naturally or dry with your hair dryer, for better results use a diffuser. It can also be used on dry hair and then just needs to be styled in place. It is a product that has a hold to it too, so once you brush or play about with it you tend to lose a lot of the hold that you originally had.
I use a minimal amount of this product as i apply some to the middle of my hair and some to my layers to achieve the volume that i need, as i think it is a waste of product and money to apply to the undrerneath of my hair as you cannot see it. Its great for big hair which is a great change for me as i always used to have flat straight hair and although i love it like that i like a change every now and again and surf spray enables me to do this.
This is the best product for hair, you can let it dry naturally and then just style it how ever you want without the hassle of spending hours having to dry it and straighten it you can spray and allow to dry with the same reults as drying with a diffuser and have the styled but messy look which is great as everyone shoud have a variety of different hair styles as it get boring having the same week in week out.
Sexy, salty, sun-dried, windswept styles - whenever, wherever. You don't have to be wearing a bikini and flip-flops, carrying a body board or have a real golden tan to look like a beach babe! In fact, you don't even have to go to the beach. For anyone, excellent for wavy types and surfers with winter blues, adds body to fine hair. Anytime; after Prep or Tonic Lotion, during styling. To Use: Work through damp or dry hair; let dry naturally or blow-dry with a diffuser, or on dry hair for detailing and adding lift at the roots. The less you touch it, the longer it will hold.
