Advantages: Good quality, light weight, affordable
Disadvantages: Not as cheap as some on the market
I have been straightening my hair on a daily basis for far too long now, and it's only really quite recently that I started to notice the damage the heat was causing. GHD's are amazing, but temperatures that high are bound to affect your hair sooner or later! Up until a couple of months ago, I only bought heat protection sprays when they were on some kind of special deal, and even then rarely got round to using them - the reason behind this I cannot explain! My hairdresser however recently commented on how dry my hair was and I realised that to prevent damaging it any further (and hopefully repair some of the existing damage) action had to be taken!
The product comes in a purple tube with a slightly darker purple lid. The Charles Worthington brand name is written on the front in large letters, and 'salon shine results' in large silver letters. The packaging of the product is very professional - something you would expect to see in a salon - but at the same time quite funky and original. It has an up-to-date, modern feel to it.
This spray claims to be able to create intense shine. The packaging states that the spray is enriched with moisturising rice protein, and that it helps to protect hair from daily damage from heat styling products whilst also smoothly frizz and locking in moisture. As my hair as been getting so dry, it seemed like the ideal product, so I decided that it was worth investing in!
How do you use it?
The spray is very simple to use! The box states to wash, dry and style hair as normal, and use the spray before using any heated styling appliances. I apply the spray liberally to my hair whilst it is wet - about 10 to 15 pumps I'd say, and then use the hair dryer. I then spray a couple more lighter sprays on my hair before going ahead to use the straighteners. This is down to personal preferences, but I have found that if I apply a lot of the spray to my hair whilst it is dry and then straighten it, it feels a little bit weighed down and ever so slightly greasy (although nowhere near as greasy as other products I have tried - the feeling of my hair is just slightly less 'fresh').
Does it work?
I have been very impressed with the results from this spray. It leaves my hair feeling light, refreshed and protected, and doesn't weigh it down or leave it feeling greasy when applied in the correct way. The smell of the product is also good - it doesn't have a particularly strong smell, but it is pleasant, unlike a lot of the other heat protection sprays on the market, so bonus points for that too!
Although the spray hasn't fixed the dryness of my hair, it doesn't claim to be able to do this. I have however felt quite a noticeable difference in the moisture in my hair after straightening it - this became apparent after only a couple of uses which is great!
Where can you get it?
You will find this stocked in most supermarkets such as Asda and Tesco, as well as Boots, Superdrug and similar stores. The product is readily available and easy to get hold of, so you shouldn't have a problem finding a stockist!
How much will it set you back?
The average price of this product is £4.49 for a 200ml bottle, which should last you a good couple of months. Although it isn't the cheapest on the market, it is by far the most expensive. I'm always reluctant to part with any of my hard earned cash on new products, but when you consider that your hair is what stays with you all day, every day, you should consider it an investment. That makes it feel cheaper!
Boots currently have the product in their 3 for 2 promotion, so you could purchase this along with the shampoo and conditioner from their range (or from a wide range of other products if you prefer!) and save yourself a bit of money there - plus you gain advantage card points!
Asda also currently have the product on offer, with it being sold for just £3 - you can't really go wrong for that price!
The verdict
I have been very pleased with the results from this spray. The product does what it says on the bottle, and has actually proved to be better than expected - I was worried about the spray making my hair feel greasy, which is the most annoying thing in the world (well, almost!) when you have newly washed hair! As long as you follow my tip and only spray it lightly unless it's wet, this shouldn't be a problem!
At full price, the product isn't overly expensive, but if you can get hold of it whilst it is on offer then it's definitely worth giving it a go! I wouldn't say the spray is the best I have ever used, and the results aren't amazing, but for the price it is a very good quality product that I will definitely be purchasing again!
Summary: An effective heat protection spray
