I'd never have bought this if I'd seen it when I'd been passing through Boots or somewhere. I'm really not fussed about designer haircare - I'm even a meanie to the point where I've used those huge 49p own-brand bottles of industrial-strength shampoo, so a pretty label and a designer name isn't going to affect my decision much. The only reason I did buy it at all, in fact, was that it was £1 at a bargain shop and I thought I'd give it a try...

It's billed pretty much as a detox diet for hair, to "deep cleanse and sweep away dirt and styling overload without stripping your hair". Sounds good so far. It also says that it contains something or other called "Damage Deflector" which "reduces oxidation harm from sun, pollution, chlorine and processing by 9%", and "increases natural moisturisers by more than 45%". Not entirely sure how they came up with those figures...

Appearance-wise, it's a clear, pale blue gel, quite thin and runny but not cheap-feeling at all. I wasn't sure how to describe the smell, so I asked my brother - who said that he couldn't actually smell anything! It's certainly a very, very mild scent which smells clean and a little bit like sea minerals. Perfect if you hate strong-smelling products, not so good if you don't like plain stuff.

I must admit that the packaging does make it look expensive and like a designer shampoo - a very simple, clear, quite chic round bottle with a plain beige lid and nice lettering on the front. My only quibble is that it's hard to read the instructions/information/ingredients on the back as writing is small and the bottle and shampoo are clear.

So, the acid test: for all its chic packaging and unintelligable promises, does it work? Well yes, it does. It really is good, actually. I don't know about its claims to make your hair "unbelievably clean", but my hair does feel soft, silky and fresh. Unusually for a shampoo, it seemed to detangle my hair and smooth it before I'd put conditioner on. (I really can't tell whether or not my hair has increased in moisture by 45% or has been de-oxidised by 9%, though!) My hair is waist-length, and I only needed a little squirt to lather all of it up...that's a good thing as the stuff isn't cheap and you want the bottle to last!

Generally about £4.99 for a 250ml bottle, Total Detox shampoo isn't cheap, but as mentioned before, I found some in a discount shop for £1 so it might be worth looking around. I know you can get it from Boots, but apart from that I'm not sure. I'd imagine places like Superdrug might stock it, so have a look in chemists.
