Advantages: Smells lovely, works well, looks pretty

Disadvantages: Is being changed for one that doesn't wark as well

As usual last Christmas I got lots of smellies as stocking fillers and these included a few sets of matching shampoo and conditioners. The Herbal Essences ones that I am currently using were part of a special offer from Asda - the standard bottles each had a free sample bottle of one of the new range taped to it so they were excellent value. At least they would have been had the ones from the new range been any good but I was sadly disappointed in both the new shampoo and the new conditioner.

Anyway the one that I am currently using is the shampoo from the original range and it is called Clairol Herbal Essences Silk 'n' Shine Shampoo which I am using with the matching Conditioner. This shampoo is apparently going to morph into 'Seductively Straight' in the new range but as I just said it isn't a patch on the original.

This shampoo comes in a clear plastic bottle, which is easy to hold onto in the shower, with a green flip top. The top of the lid is circular but the underneath has a straight edge as though a sliver of the circle has been cut away. This means that flicking the container open in the shower with wet hands is made much easier. I bet it was a woman who had that idea..... I'll get into trouble for THAT remark!

The front of the bottle has the words 'Clairol Herbal Essences Silk 'n' Shine Shampoo - Dry Damaged Hair'. The shampoo itself contains rose hips, jojoba extracts and vitamin E. The label on the back has a picture on the reverse of it showing pink roses so that the picture shows through when you look at the bottle from the front if you see what I mean. Anyway it does mean that it looks pretty on the bathroom shelf.

The shampoo claims to 'revitalise your senses in a world of botanical bliss, invigorating and luxurious, this fragrant shampoo, exclusively blended with 100% organic botanicals, will leave you feeling refreshed and your hair at its most beautiful'.

I accept this is advertising speak but to be fair this is a lovely shampoo and it does the business.

It is a pretty pale pink in colour and to use it I just had to squeeze a bit onto my hands and massage into my hair. The shampoo lathers well and soon my head was a mass of bubbles and yes, I would describe them as luxurious as they feel thick and creamy. I don't need to use much as our water is very soft and I do only have fairly short hair.

The fragrance really is lovely. I couldn't have picked out the rose hip smell but it does smell really fresh and flowery.

The bubbles wash out easily enough but then I do shampoo my hair under a power shower. I then use the matching conditioner to finish off.

The results with this shampoo and conditioner were exactly what I have to come to expect from the Herbal Essences range. Although to be fair my hair is in good condition to begin with and it is quite short and fairly think in texture, this shampoo makes it feels REALLY soft. In fact if I had to blow dry it into a complicated style I think it might well be too soft straight after washing. As my hair is in a simple bob and just brushed straight from root to tips blow drying was easy enough and my hair has an amazing shine and it smells lovely and fresh.

There are the usual warnings on the back of the bottle about not getting the stuff in your eyes and washing it out straight away with cold water if you do.

The list of ingredients is very long and as you might expect there are a fair few chemicals in there!

The 400g bottle from the original range currently retails at £2.92 in Boots and the equivalent sixe in the new range costs £3.22. Boots often have offers on these products so if they are the ones you like wait for an offer and stock up!

If I can find any of this original one on the shelves I shall definitely buy it again but if these all eventually disappear in favour of the new range I shall be changing my allegiance to another brand I'm afraid.

Herbal Essences is made by Proctor and Gamble UK of Weybridge, Surrey KT13 0XP.
