Advantages: Easy to use, affordable, great colours

Disadvantages: Damages the hair

Clairol Nice n Easy has been one of my favourite hair colouring products for a very long time now. I have tried out most colours during the course of my adult life, but more recently I have been jumping between being blonde, dark blonde and brunette. I find that Nice n Easy have a suitable shade for me whatever colour I decide I would like to be.

I recently grew all of the peroxide blonde out of my hair, having been colouring it with dark blonde (no peroxide) for a while, and then having had it cut short. My hair was looking lovely and healthy without all the layers of hair dye on it, so I was loathed to ruin this healthy sheen. However, I still felt the need to try something new, and I decided that having light blonde hair for the summer would not be so bad providing I switched back to having darker blonde hair towards the winter time.

Nice n Easy is a really simple and straightforward product to use. I had my light ash blonde kit and I simply mixed two bottles of product together as directed by the instructions. I then massaged the mixed dye through my hair, and left it for the duration indicated by my strand test. I had conducted a strand test 48hrs previously and a skin allergy test at the same time, see the instructions for further details on how and why to do these tests in advance. I then washed out the hair dye, which took just a few minutes to do, and applied the conditioning treatment that was included with the product and waited three minutes before rinsing that out too.

After drying my hair, I revealed beautiful, soft blonde locks that looked really healthy and had a brilliant shine to them. One of the advertising slogans in recent times from this product has been "working with your natural tones and highlights", or words to that effect, and this product certainly lives up to those claims for me. My hair isn't a solid block of fake colour, instead it's a combination of blonde shades which looks so much more natural than a thick block of colour.

I find that this is a really simple and effective product to use, that is widely available at a reasonable price of around £3 to £5 per box depending on the shop and any special offers. It is recommended that you touch up the roots every six weeks, but if like me you choose a shade that blends in with your natural hair colour, then you can get away with leaving it a little bit longer between applications. This is important to do if you are at all concerned about the health of your hair, as all hair dye products cause damage in the long run. The less you use them, the healthier the appearance of your hair.

Summary: I really love this product.

I've never done a strand test in the 12 years I've been dying my hair - I've never figured out how you're supposed to do one without having to open the hair dye (and of course you then can't use it as it needs to be used immediately) - could you enlighten me?!
