Denman Professional Comb
Advantages: A reasonable price, and an excellent well made comb
Disadvantages: A little bulky if you wanted to take it out with you, either for pocket of small bag.
These specifications were taken from a professional hair dressing supply site (as I've long since lost the packaging the comb came in), which I assume means it is indeed used by professionals, at least some of the time, as is stated in the advertising.
* Strong and durable
* Heat resistant
* Chemical resistant
* Light and flexible
* Gentle on the hair and scalp
* Professionally made for professional results.
The comb is made from one piece of plastic and the handle is large and ergonomically shaped, it seems to be perfectly weighted to nestle in the hand without causing strain. I often have problems with combs flipping and twisting in my hand when it hits a knot and I've never had that problem with this Denman comb.
I can't vouch for how this comb handles heat and chemicals as I don't use it with any heated styling aids. I also don't use many chemicals on my hair, but it seems to cope well with the rare splosh of colour product, conditioners etc. A part of one claim it makes I would totally disagree with 'light and flexible', while it is very light it is not really flexible. It's pretty rigid in construction; the only 'give' at all is in the handle from side to side and then only a tiny bit, and only with a lot of pressure. This very subtle flexibility is not a problem and seems to work far better than comes that are too 'bend'. So it is a positive rather than a negative. Perhaps I've read it wrong and they mean flexible as in it can be used for many different purposes.
I hadn't noticed on my packaging that it said that it was anti-static, but I have noticed that my hair appears smoother and less frizzy when I use this comb or my Denman brush. Which I presume is down to the reduction in static.
The teeth are quite long, and smooth with a rounded tip which doesn't scratch the skin. The fact that the teeth have no 'seam' (as far as I can tell) unlike so many other combs means that there is less friction in use so avoiding unnecessary micro abrasion of the hair shaft. Therefore using this or similarly constructed items is better for the condition and over all look of your hair in the long term as well as short term than most other similarl products. My hair definitely looks better and is easier to manage when I've been using Denman products for a while.
The shape of the comb, most specifically the teeth seems to follow a very subtle arc matching the curve of your head so more teeth are in contact with your scalp. Allthough this is a wide toothed comb the gap between teeth isn't as wide as with some but still more than wide enough to cope with many different hair types and to comb product through wet or damp hair without too much stretching and damage. With 24 teeth the comb is nice and long giving a good width of sweep through the hair which is just perfect in my opinion; I have found some other wide toothed combs to be too short and fiddly to get through a full head of hair easily and quickly.
As my hair is long quite thick with a little bit of a wave to it I wouldn't usually use a comb in any capacity other than to create a parting as it would normally just get lost in the shrubbery, tugging at and damaging the foliage. However as mentioned above I bought this comb for a specific purpose when I needed to carry something with me to maintain a groomed appearance throughout the day but was unable to take my usual massive bag, I knew a 'normal' comb wouldn't be good enough so compromised with this one. Although this was a downsize for me from a brush it is by no means a small comb and it certainly wouldn't fit in to a dinky little evening bag. Judging by eye it looks about 8-9 inches long and 2 wide. I would have bought a foldable brush, but the bag I was using was a long but very slim clutch so anything 'thick' would have spoiled the look of it and for me this comb fitted the bill perfectly.
Even though this comb was bought for a one off purpose I have continued to use it fairly regularly as it gets through my hair easily, dealing with knots with minimum damage and pain. I often opt to take it with me now in my usual bag even though it could accommodate my brush the comb is lighter in weight. It is also ideal for distributing conditioner and other treatments evenly through the hair even when wet. I don't use the comb for styling or cutting my hair, but apparently the long straight firm teeth give a good base on which to rest a scissors and give a good and easier cut.
My youngest daughter uses this regularly too, to distribute Ojon or other intensive hair conditioning products through her very long (top of the thigh) hair. Her hair is a different texture to mine and while it is thick the individual hairs themselves are very fine. This comb deals with this delicate hair without stretching or breaking them, and helps to keep her long delicate tresses in fine fettle.
Because of the thoughtful construction of this comb it is also easy to keep clean with no little raggedy threadlike bits of plastic peeling away along seams with repeated washing and use as sometimes happens as lesser combs get older.
I've had this comb for 6 years now and it looks almost like new. Admittedly we don't use it every day, nor do we use it with heat or many chemicals but it has stood the test of time very well indeed. I expect to get at least another several years use out of this comb, barring acts of dog, excellent value for money I thinkl.
Summary: An excellent wide toothed comb that does the business which lasts and lasts
