Hair extensions are all the rage now and to have the plaits put in and beads threaded on to the ends can cost up to £300.

If you are thinking about extensions try doing it yourself first. It is so easy to do, with a little bit of patience you can save yourself a fortune.
My daughter and I decided to do her hair between us and it has turned out really well.

We bought the hair from ‘Claires Accessories’ in the high street at £6.50 a bag and it took three bags in all, then the coloured beads were from a market stall costing £4.00.

To start you have to divide your own hair into even sections then slowly take a thin skein of your own hair, a skein of the false hair folded exactly in half. Loop the centre of the false hair as close to your scalp as you can so that you have three skeins of hair to plait.
It is very tempting to use thicker wads of hair to get the job done quicker, but it looks far more professional if you keep them thin and make sure that the plaits are tight.

When you get down the plait to where your own hair ends just divide the two false hair skeins into three and carry on to the end.
We have found that it is a good idea to put a couple of small stitches in the hair using a good cotton to stop the plaits unwinding at the ends and to keep the weight down we have only beaded a few of the braids.

It is very time consuming but with patience it can really save you money.
A good tip if you want to do it yourself is to do the front and all around your ears on one day then slowly work backwards over a week. This way you don’t get fed up with it and you can tie it up for a few days and it still looks presentable.

The back is quite tricky to do yourself but it is possible with the help of a mirror, and by the time you get to the back you are more used to the plaiting anyway. If you get stuck you can always call on a friend to help.

It is tempting to have really long
extensions put in but don’t go too mad because there is a lot of weight on your head especially if you have the beads as well and within a week you will be suffering with chronic headaches.

Washing your hair is difficult because you cannot give your scalp a good scrub in case you damage the plaiting.
The best way though is to lie in the bath. Give it a really good soak then shower the shampoo off thoroughly.
Drying takes ages so be prepared to spend at least an hour with the hair drier and don’t forget that when it is wet you are carrying even more weight around on your poor old bonce!

Good luck and I hope I have saved you some cash.

it's a great tip, I agree it's a good way to save money and also can be fun as well as time consuming. However I would have liked to have sen some information on the following. How long do they last, does this damage the hair in anyway, how do you get them out, what is the extention made of.
all in all a good guide to how to achieve the look for a snip.
